PM Pashinyan: Armenia will never be involved in any anti-Iran conspiracy

Monday, 10:19 AM  [ Last Update: Monday, 10:48 AM ]

Armenia never has and will never be involved in any conspiracy against Iran, says the Armenian prime minister amid heightened tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan.

“I am confident that our Iranian partners know that the Republic of Armenia has never been and will never be involved in any conspiracy against Iran, because we extremely value those relations,” Nikol Pashinyan said, Armen Press reported on Sunday.

Pashinyan said his country will never forget that “Iran was the path of life for Armenia in the early 90s,” making a reference to a peace agreement brokered by Iran in 1992 between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“This is such a firm ground for our relations that rules out any involvement of Armenia in any anti-Iran conspiracy,” he reiterated.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and neighboring Azerbaijan over the Israeli regime’s presence on Azeri soil, which Iran regards as a threat against its national security.

The Iranian Army’s Ground Forces on Friday held military exercises codenamed Fatehan-e Khaybar (Conquerors of Khaybar) in the northwestern part of the country.

Iran top security official urges neighbors to be vigilant in face of 'foreign influence'

Iran’s top security official says neighboring states need to remain vigilant in the face of foreign influence.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has criticized Iran’s exercises. Tehran has hit back by saying that holding drills is part of the national sovereignty, warning that Israel’s anti-Iran activities in neighboring countries will not be tolerated.

On Sunday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the interference of foreign actors in the region is a source of discord and damage, warning that those who suffer from the illusion of trusting foreign forces to establish security in their country “will soon get slapped.”

Armenian FM arrives in Tehran

On Monday, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan arrived in Tehran to meet his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

According to the Armenian Foreign Ministry, the two foreign ministers will issue a joint press statement after their scheduled meeting.

Mirzoyan and Amir-Abdollahian met on the sidelines of the latest session of the UN General Assembly in New York last month, when the former called for expansion of cooperation with the Islamic Republic in the oil and energy sectors.

In his Sunday remarks, Pashinyan pointed out that he has met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi twice, which he said shows how much Armenia values its relations with Iran.

Iranian MPs back latest military drills, slam border movements as Iran’s ‘red line’

Iranian lawmakers have hailed recent military exercises in northwestern Iran as a warning against Israel.

The Armenian prime minister said during his meetings with President Raeisi that he had suggested that major projects with Iran would be accelerated, particularly the 3rd high-voltage power transmission line which is under construction.

He said the Armenian side hopes to extend the “gas for electricity” contract.

“During the meetings, I also suggested that we should return to the issue of the construction of Meghri reservoir and HPP, which I think is very important not only in terms of energy, but also in terms of joint management of water resources,’’ Pashinyan added.

$45 Million Property in Central London

            Publisher, The California Courier
            www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com
This sensational report was exposed by the international news media on
Oct. 3, 2021. While this is not the first time it has been revealed
that the family of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has purchased
hundreds of millions of dollars of properties in foreign countries
through offshore companies, it is the latest and most detailed such
scandalous news.

The report about Aliyev’s 11-year-old son Heydar Aliyev was exposed by
the Pandora Papers—the largest collection of leaks of concealed
financial documents. These secret files were organized by the
International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) with the
participation of over 650 reporters worldwide. The records contain
“nearly 12 million documents and files from 14 financial service
companies in several countries, the British Virgin Islands, Panama,
Belize, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Switzerland,”
according to the BBC.

While many of “the revealed transactions involve no legal wrongdoing,”
there are serious “concerns that some property buyers could be hiding
money-laundering activities,” the BBC stated. “Offshore companies can
offer to help people hide dodgy cash or avoid tax. They are using
those offshore accounts, those offshore trusts, to buy hundreds of
millions of dollars of property in other countries, and to enrich
their own families, at the expense of their citizens,” added Fergus
Shiel from ICIJ.

The BBC went on to report that “The Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev
and his family, who have been accused of looting their own country,
are one example. The investigation found the Aliyevs and their close
associates have secretly been involved in property deals in the UK
worth more than £400 million [$540 million]. Azerbaijan’s ruling
Aliyev family, long accused of corruption, have built a vast offshore
network to hide their money.” Pres. Aliyev’s annual salary is
$228,000.

BBC also revealed that the Aliyevs bought 17 buildings in the UK,
including an entire block of office buildings in the posh Mayfair area
of London for $45 million in 2009 for the president’s 11-year-old son,
Heydar Aliyev, who was then in grade school.

The Aliyevs bought another building in London for $47 million in 2008
and sold it in 2018 for $89 million, making a profit of $42 million.
The Aliyevs sold that property “to the Crown Estate—the Queen’s
property empire that is managed by The [UK] Treasury and raises cash
for the nation.” BBC reported that “The Crown Estate said it carried
out the checks required in law at the time of purchase but is now
looking into the matter.”

A separate article on the ICIJ website, under the title of “The Power
Players,” highlighted the incredible wealth of Azerbaijan President’s
three children: Arzu Aliyeva, Heydar Aliyev, and Leyla Aliyeva.

The ICIJ article explained that “Ilham Aliyev became president of
Azerbaijan in a 2003 election widely regarded as manipulated…. He has
de facto control over the state oil fund, which generates annual
revenue of $9 billion. His presidency has been marked by brutal
political crackdowns and human rights violations, including the
imprisonment and torture of journalists and dissidents. Despite
accusations of running a kleptocracy, Aliyev maintains close
relationships with European leaders through what has come to be known
as ‘caviar diplomacy.’ The 2017 Azerbaijani Laundromat investigation
by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project revealed how
almost $3 billion linked to Aliyev was laundered through shell
companies, with much of the proceeds spent on gifts for European
politicians. Other media investigations, including ICIJ’s Offshore
Leaks and Panama Papers, have shown that the Aliyev family controls
significant wealth in Azerbaijan and that the president’s three
children also own properties in the U.K. and Dubai.”

ICIJ further revealed that “The Pandora Papers provide a view of the
startling scale of the Aliyev children’s luxury property investments.
They were shareholders of 44 companies registered in the British
Virgin Islands between 2006 and 2018. The records show the children
owned five companies used to buy more than $120 million worth of
high-end London properties between 2006 and 2009, many of which were
later sold for vast profits.”

Besides the $45 million London office building owned by then
11-year-old Heydar Aliyev, his sister Arzu purchased anther office
building one block away through an offshore company for $47 million.
“In 2009, a company owned by the eldest child, Leyla Aliyeva, bought a
$13.5 million corner building behind London’s Oxford Circus, which has
housed a string of businesses run by Aliyev family friends,” according
to ICIJ.

In an effort to obscure the ownership of these properties, “starting
in 2013, the children transferred shares in their offshore companies
to their maternal grandfather, Arif Pashayev. The holdings were later
transferred to a series of trusts based in the Isle of Man, a British
dependency and secrecy haven. Pashayev and two close associates bought
further properties in and around London worth more than $500 million
between 2006 and 2017,” ICIJ revealed. Not surprisingly, none of the
Aliyev family members responded to ICIJ’s repeated requests for
comment.

While it is disgraceful that funds belonging to the citizens of
Azerbaijan were misused, the good news for Armenians is that
Azerbaijan did not use these large sums to purchase more arms, to
inflict further damage on the people of Armenia and Artsakh!

2-         Palestinian-Armenian dispute over Jerusalem land deal intensifies

JERUSALEM—The Synod of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem issued a
statement on September 9 ratifying and confirming the decision to
lease the lands owned by the patriarchate in Goveroun Bardez to a
company which will build a hotel (this statement appeared in The
California Courier on September 16, 2021).

The Higher Presidential Committee of Church Affairs in Palestine
issued a letter on September 22 expressing concerns about this lease.
On Sept. 22, a letter was sent by Ramzi Khoury, head of the
Palestinian Higher Presidential Committee for Churches Affairs in
Palestine, to Catholicos of All Armenians Patriarch Karekin II calling
land transactions in the Armenian Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem
a violation of international law, since the area inside the Old City
is an “integral part of the Palestinian occupied territories” governed
by relevant international resolutions.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry has also been “urged to intervene,”
according to a statement by the Higher Presidential Committee.

Father Baret Yeretzian, Real Estate Director of the Armenian
Patriarchate of Jerusalem, sent an open letter to the Head of the
Palestinian higher Presidential Committee for Churches Affairs in
Palestine, responding to accusation leveled against the Armenian
Patriarchate for leasing a property in Jerusalem’s Old City known as
the Cows' Garden to an Israeli hotel company. The California Courier
received the full text of the open letter, from Yeretzian to Khoury,
which is printed below:

“The Armenian Patriarchate is the exclusive owner of its property and
shall remain so at all times, the Patriarchate’s ownership was not
undermined under the Ottoman Empire, the British Mandate, the
Jordanian and the Israeli regimes.

The un-protected lease is for a limited period of time and for the
specific purpose of a hotel.

The Patriarchate has full authority and exclusive prerogative to do as
it pleases with its properties.

The denomination and race of the counter party is irrelevant. The
Patriarchate was negotiating similar deals indiscriminately with
Armenians from Russia, with an Arab from Jordan, and people of other
nationalities none of whom followed through.

It is our duty to utilize our properties for the welfare of our
Patriarchate and we have been doing so for centuries.

Irresponsible comments that are made public might encourage extremists
to take extreme measures. One should also remember that he might be
held responsible for such consequences.

You claim that you want to protect our land, let me remind you when we
begged your committee to help us against the Abu Hawa family who
infiltrated in our property on Mount of Olives, you turned blind eye
on us, we did request also others without mentioning their names, they
did the same.

We cannot help suspecting that your criticism against us is aimed to
undermine and weaken the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in favor
of your own religious leadership who sold properties in the heart of
the Old City of Jerusalem. The Armenian Patriarchate maintains its
neutrality and un-involvement in political and racial matters. Please
do not drag us into such disputes and do not use us in order to
promote your political agenda.

Let me remind you we hold in highest esteem and sympathy the
Palestinian and Jordanian people, and I have the honor of being a
Jordanian citizen myself.”

3-         Letter to the Editor

To The Editor:

From the start of Mr. Harut Sassounian’s journey publishing The
California Courier, I looked forward to receiving the weekly issues,
In particular reading Mr. Sassounian’s thought-provoking column on
page 4.

This letter is following a lengthy telephone conversation I had with
Mr. Sassounian last week regarding matters of concern to us all
Armenians.

Mr. Sassounian’s appeal for the medical emergency fund-raising for the
children of Armenia and Artsakh came to my attention recently. This
came as no surprise as it has always been his ongoing commitment to
come to the aid of the nation of Armenia.

The ruthless war declared on Artsakh and Armenia by Azerbaijan with
the collaboration of Turkey, which took advantage of the situation to
continue its history of barbarism and genocidal fervor against
Armenians. In addition to those two mighty combined forces, the
participation of the hired mercenaries from other countries
transported to the front lines to facilitate and complete the crime.

Yet we survived. We cannot give up, we will not surrender.

The late Defense Minister of the Republic of Armenia Vasken
Sarkissian, wrote in his diary

“I fear those who do not fear, I fear those who are indifferent.”

Nor do I forget the words of the late Varsenig Abolakian, who on the
occasion of a meeting in 1999 at our home discussing establishing a
hotel in Stepanakert, in response to the question, “Will the
investment be secure?” Varsenig said, “Yete anonk arian kinov ge
vjaren, mern al togh ka tramin.” (If they are paying with their blood,
let us at least be ready to pay with money.)

These words have never left me. Call it emotional, if you wish. We are
not made of the hardest substance on earth!

With four partners we founded ‘Nairi Hotel’ in Stepanakert, 20 years
ago in 2001. Throughout the years ‘Nairi Hotel’ accommodated many
visitors, dignitaries, compatriots and other guests from around the
world. ‘A home away from home’.

It became a shelter for families from the ‘four-day war’ during April
of 2016 and again with a larger numbers of refugees who are still
living there from the 44-day war that began on September 27, 2020
which resulted in incalculable damage and loss of life and our lands
in Artsakh.

Of course I would contribute to participate in Mr. Sassounian’s current project.

It seems this is part of our destiny, our inheritance, an ongoing
burden. So be it.

It is a fact that our people gets together in times of need and under
immense pressure and at critical times I believe most respond
generously and continue to help the homeland and the children of our
beloved Armenia. We are thankful for the support of our compatriots.

Please allow me to acknowledge Mr. Sassounian’s contribution to our
people and homeland. In his own way, he has set the standard and
example to follow. I still remember on one occasion visiting Mr.
Sassounian in his office in Los Angeles. His complimentary remarks
touched me and have touched me since. He is a rare individual. Thank
you, Harut, for your relentless work to help the people of our
homeland.

Azerbaijani press: Baku rules out presence of third forces on Iran-Azerbaijan border

By Vafa Ismayilova

Baku has dismissed as unfounded allegations that third forces are located near the Azerbaijani-Iranian border, the Foreign Ministry said on October 4.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Leyla Abdullayeva made the remarks to comment on Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian's recent interview.

"Firstly, we would like to emphasize that, as Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian noted in an interview with a local TV channel, relations between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran are at the highest level. Relations between Azerbaijan and Iran are based on historical ties, friendship, and cooperation. We do not accept the allegations about the presence of any third forces near the Azerbaijani-Iranian border and about the provocative attempts of these forces because these views are unfounded," Abdullayeva said.

She reiterated that relations between Azerbaijan and Iran are based on strong historical ties, friendship, and cooperation. She ruled out any threat to Azerbaijan and its neighbors.

"In general, the presence on the territory of Azerbaijan of any forces, including terrorist ones, which may pose a threat to our state and neighboring countries, cannot be a subject of discussion. Unfortunately, even during the 44-day Patriotic War, some parties voiced such unfounded allegations. We said it back then and we're saying it now – such allegations are unfounded, and to this day the Azerbaijani side was not presented with any relevant evidence to prove the opposite," Abdullayeva said.

The spokesperson stressed that the inviolability of internationally recognized borders is one of the fundamental principles that Azerbaijan has always been guided by.

She recalled that Azerbaijan has suffered for decades from the military occupation of part of its territory and the violation of its international borders.

"More than 130 kilometers of our border with Iran were under Armenian occupation for many years. Unfortunately, over the years we have not heard from the friendly Iranian state such a harsh reaction as now, regarding the occupation of a part of our border," Abdullayeva said.

The spokesperson stressed that Azerbaijan supports the establishment of relations with all countries on the basis of respect for each other's international borders, which is the unchanging position of the country.

She recalled that Azerbaijan also expressed its readiness to normalize ties with Armenia on the basis of fundamental principles of international law and start talks on the delimitation of borders.

"The process of delimiting the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia is a bilateral issue, and the recent positive signals from the opposite side allow us to hope for the development of this process in a constructive manner," Abdullayeva noted.

As far as external forces are concerned, Azerbaijan has always led an independent foreign policy based on its national interests and proved this with its specific steps repeatedly during 30 years, she added.

"The development of friendly and good-neighborly relations with neighboring countries is one of the main priorities of Azerbaijan's foreign policy, and we are constantly taking steps in this direction," the spokesperson underlined.

Abdullayeva noted that Azerbaijan is very sensitive to the issue of Islamic solidarity and, as is well known, is distinguished by its active position in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

"Over the past decades, Azerbaijan has been focusing on the destruction, plundering of the Islamic cultural and historical heritage on its territory and highly appreciates the support in this matter of its fair position by the OIC countries," she said.

"We believe that the end of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories, the illegal actions of Armenia in this region, including the concentration of large quantities of weapons and ammunition, illegal economic and other actions, drug smuggling, training of terrorists, destruction, and desecration of monuments of Islamic religion and culture, as well as the return of former refugees to their native lands after 30 years of separation, ensuring stability and security in the region must meet the interests of Iran," Abdullayeva concluded.

Azerbaijani press: US trying to find opportunities to create co-op between Azerbaijan and Armenia – ambassador

By Trend

The US is trying to find opportunities to create cooperation between Azerbaijan and Armenia, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Earle Lee Litzenberger said answering questions of journalists, Trend reports.

Litzenberger called it obvious that a number of unresolved issues remain between the two countries after the end of the 2020 second Karabakh war.

Following over a month of military action to liberate its territories from Armenian occupation from late Sept. to early Nov. 2020, Azerbaijan has pushed Armenia to sign the surrender document. A joint statement on the matter was made by the Azerbaijani president, Armenia's PM, and the president of Russia.

A complete ceasefire and a cessation of all hostilities in the zone of the Karabakh conflict were introduced on Nov. 10, 2020.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, the Armenian Armed Forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Turkey and Azerbaijan’s Continued Influence in Nagorno-Karabakh

Oct 2 2021

10/02/2021 Nagorno-Karabakh (International Christian Concern) –  Azerbaijan and Turkey continue to promote their inter-connectivity in Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenian: Artsakh) in ways that simultaneously threaten the Christian Armenian population. Their rhetoric is being incorporated into the education of the youth, as well as humanitarian assistance.

As secondary schools open up in Azerbaijan, a new subject is being introduced for all students titled “Karabakh is Azerbaijan”. Regardless of the educational language of the school, students will be taught this subject in the Azerbaijani language, once per week. In early September President Ilham Aliyev said, “Azerbaijani values, our national values are the main principle for us, and the young generation must be educated in this spirit, in the national spirit, in the spirit of patriotism.” The focus on Azerbaijan’s conquest during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War teaches hateful and discriminatory rhetoric towards Armenians.

The Turkish Red Crescent was also involved at the beginning of the school year in Nagorno-Karabakh. The group distributed clothing and stationary to nine different schools in partnership with the Azerbaijani Red Crescent, calling the donations gifts for Turkey’s Azerbaijani “brothers and sisters”.

ICC’s recent report on Turkey’s overflowing influence states that the country is guilty of violating religious freedom by exploiting people, exporting persecution, and enabling perpetrators. Specifically, in regards to humanitarian efforts, “it is also worth noting that much of the media produced by Turkey’s humanitarian and military partners often includes Grey Wolf symbolism… An extremist movement connected with the MHP party and youth cultural centers, the Grey Wolves are well-known for violently targeting ethnic-religious minorities and have been involved through many of most egregious violations of religious freedom.”

Communist Party of Armenia: Yerjanik Ghazaryan re-elected First Secretary

The newly elected First Secretary delivered a speech, in which he referred to the internal political situation in Armenia, the Armenian-Russian relations, the forthcoming local elections, and the further actions of the party.

In a congratulatory message the First Vice Сhairman of the CC of the  Union of Communist Parties-Communist Party of the Soviet Union (UCP-CPSU) Kazbek Taysaev notes:

"We are confident that the trust placed in Yerjanik Ghazaryan will become a good basis for constructive work and will contribute to strengthening the authority of the party in Armenia, and personal qualities will serve the noble cause of protecting public interests, fighting the capitalist system and upholding social justice. We will support and promote his good endeavors in every possible way!

We sincerely wish you new achievements and victories in this position."

Galatasaray fan violence after Marseille supporters display Greek & Armenian flags

Oct 2 2021

Fans of Turkish side Galatasaray rioted during the Europa League away match against French outfit Marseille.

The match was interrupted when the Turkish fans entered into a skirmish with the Marseilles fans and began to throw firecrackers and smoke bombs at everything and everyone.

https://twitter.com/artsakheng/status/1444050658273816579

Their excuse was because Marseille fans displayed the Greek, Armenian and Kurdish flags during the game.

Galatasaray fans also displayed the Azerbaijani flag and made Far-Right Grey Wolves hand signals.

The Grey Wolves are an international Turkish organisation responsible for massacres against minorities in Turkey, bullying and harassing Armenians throughout Europe, and sending members to fight and commit atrocities in Syrian and Armenian warzones.

Galatasaray head coach Fatih Terim said: “I asked our fans to stay calm. However, if the opponent shows the Armenian flag, then they will provoke us.

“Constantly the Greek, then the Armenian flags. The fans said that they are provoked, in which they are absolutely right.”

Not only did Terim affirm the issue of Grecophobia and Armenphobia in Turkey, but then also ignored the fact that Galatasaray supporters were making hand signals of the Far-Right Grey Wolves organisation, which is recognised as a terrorist organisation in France.

Anne-Laurence Petel, a French MP and Commission for Economic Affairs, wrote on Twitter that “It is unacceptable that the Gray Wolves are reconstituting themselves!”

She added that she wrote to Anne-Laurence Petel Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin to urge him “to show the greatest firmness against the enemies of the Republic!”

https://twitter.com/al_petel/status/1443951731893747722

Three police officers were also injured over the course of 0-0 match.

Galatasaray fans were prohibited from traveling from Turkey to this high-risk game, but the club has numerous supporters in the rest of Europe, including France.

Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict: Mother of Armenian soldier receives his tortured and beheaded body after six months

Opindia
Oct 2 2021

The soldier named Gagik was captured and taken as a prisoner of war (POW) from a place called Tyak in Hadrut during the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict last year

A shocking case of gruesome violence inflicted upon a soldier stationed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war came to light recently, where the soldier’s body was found mutilated and head cut off. According to a report by the journalist Yeranuhi Soghoyan published on an Armenian website, the soldier named Gagik was captured and taken as a prisoner of war (POW) from a place called Tyak in Hadrut during the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict last year. The soldier’s mother Lusine said, “He was captured not by the Azeris, but by Turkish mercenaries”. Azerbaijani Turks are also known as Azeris.

In the video that was later obtained by the mother, it showed the soldier being kicked in the mouth as he says Karabakh is Armenia.

Further details revealed that the mother of the soldier personally identified his son’s dead body. According to the reports, the soldier was brutally tortured and his skin was flayed with multiple knife marks on the chest. There were also gunshot wounds in his leg with ribs completely broken and the head cut off. The body also carried burn marks.

The author Yeranuhi Soghoyan added, “Lusine asked the autopsy doctor if the boy’s internal organs were in place and received a negative answer. For some reason he reasoned that the body was burnt, that’s why it is not there, but the body was not burnt to such an extent that there were no internal organs, the fire did not affect the internal organs only, if that was the case, I would not be given a body, but a handful ‘Ash’, says Lusine.”

It should be mentioned that Nagorno-Karabakh is a strife-torn region that lies within the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan and is governed by ethnic Armenians. This disputed territory is internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan, but in de facto control of the Republic of Artsakh for decades. The Republic of Artsakh exists with no recognition from any United Nations member or observer state and has close ties with Armenia. Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020 that lasted for around one and half months started on 27th September and ended on November 10 with a trilateral ceasefire agreement between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia, which compelled Armenia to concede all the remaining occupied territories surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh.

On 27th September 2020, clashes erupted on the Armenian-Azerbaijani Line of Control. It was believed that the fighting was triggered by an Azerbaijani offensive, with the support of Turkey.

Moreover, Turkey had sent two Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups into the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone comprising of around 2,500 men in support of Azerbaijan. France had accused Turkey of funnelling Syrian jihadists into the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Sunni majority countries like Turkey and Pakistan appear to have close ties with a Shia majority Azerbaijan, having recognized its independence from the USSR in 1991. Azerbaijan and Turkey have declared their support for Pakistan over its stance on the Kashmir issue openly opposing India.
