Armenia submits Should the Wind Drop for 94th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS.  The National Cinema Center of Armenia selected director Nora Martirosyan’s Should the Wind Drop as a submission for the 94th Academy Awards Best International Feature Film category.

Should the Wind Drop is a 2020 Armenian-Belgian-French drama film starring Grégoire Colin and Hayk Bakhryan. The film was produced by Sister Productions in France, Kwassa Films in Belgium, and Aneva in Armenia.

The film was selected for the 73rd edition of the Cannes Festival.

North Korea announces successful test fire of new hypersonic missile

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS North Korea has claimed that it successfully tested a new hypersonic missile called Hwasong-8 on Tuesday.

State media said the new missile was one of the "five most important" new weapons systems laid out in its five-year military development plan.

They called the missile a "strategic weapon".

"The development of this weapons system…[has increased] the nation's capabilities for self-defence in every way," North Korean state news outlet KCNA said.

Fates of over 2000 historical-cultural monuments of Artsakh in danger

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian historical-cultural heritage, located in the territories currently under the control of Azerbaijan as a result of the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh war, is under a serious danger, Artsakh’s Permanent Representative to Armenia Sergei Ghazaryan said during the session of the Armenian parliamentary standing committee on human rights and public affairs.

Mr. Ghazaryan said that the fates of over 2000 monuments under the Azerbaijani control are endangered. These monuments include 13 monasteries, 122 churches, 52 castles and 523 cross-stones.

“127 school libraries, 12 museums with more than 20,000 samples, have been left in the lost territories of Artsakh”, he said.

Sergei Ghazaryan said after the 2020 November 9 statement on the ceasefire, cases of vandalism and destructions of Armenian cultural heritage have been registered, including the deliberate targeting of Shushi’s St. Ghazanchetsots church and the St. Hovhannes Mkrtich church.

Putin-Erdogan meeting kicks off in Sochi

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. The meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan kicked off in the Russian city of Sochi on September 29.

The two leaders are expected to discuss the various aspects of the Russian-Turkish cooperation in political, commercial and economic areas, as well as relevant international issues, including the situation in Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and the South Caucasus.

The last in-person meeting of Putin and Erdogan was held in March 2020 at the Kremlin during Erdogan’s working visit to Moscow. After that all the talks were held either by phone or remotely because of COVID-19.

Armenian FM, Bulgarian Ambassador highlight peaceful settlement of NK conflict within Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan received today Ambassador of Bulgaria to Armenia Kalin Vasilev Anastasov, the ministry told Armenpress.

The officials in their remarks praised the rich agenda of the Armenian-Bulgarian relations and exchanged views on the expansion of cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Ararat Mirzoyan and Kalin Anastasov highlighted the positive dynamics registered in commercial sector, the ongoing works for opening direct flights between the capitals of the two countries, as well as emphasized the role of the bilateral inter-governmental commission on economic cooperation for the further development of the partnership.

The Armenian FM and the Bulgarian Ambassador discussed also the further development of the Armenia-EU partnership and the cooperation within the Eastern Partnership.

The meeting also touched upon the current humanitarian problems facing Artsakh caused by the Azerbaijani aggression.

Both officials emphasized the necessity of the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict within the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship.

Eurovision offers condolences over death of Armenian singer Hayko

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. Eurovision Song Contest offered condolences over the death of Armenian singer and songwriter Hayko (Hayk Hakobyan).

“We’re very sorry to hear of the passing of Armenian artist Hayko. Hayko represented his country at Eurovision 2007 where he finished 8th with his touching ballad ‘Anytime You Need’. You will always be in our hearts”, Eurovision said on Twitter.

Hayko died today from COVID-19 at the age of 48.

Armenian Embassy in Georgia suggests carrying out cargo transportation through Bavra- Ninotsminda border checkpoint

The large volume of cargo transportation through the territory of Georgia, as well as the construction works underway at the Upper Lars checkpoint in Russia, have caused traffic jam of trucks on the Tbilisi bypass road, ARMENPRESS reports the Embassy of Armenia in Georgia informed.

‘’For avoiding the traffic jams, if possible, the cargo carriers can carry out cargo transportation through Bavra-Ninotsminda border checkpoint instead of Bagratashen-Sadakhlo checkpoint’’, the Embassy said.

Deputy PM Papikyan, Ambassador of Iran discuss situation on Goris-Kapan road

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Suren Papikyan received Ambassador of Iran to Armenia Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri. The Deputy PM noted that the strengthening and development of Armenian-Iranian relations are of strategic importance for Armenia. Suren Papikyan highly appreciated the personal contribution of the Ambassador to the deepening of the Armenian-Iranian relations.

As ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Deputy PM, Suren Papikyan stated that the agenda of the Armenian-Iranian relations is quite broad, and no efforts should be spared to fully realize it so as to complete the ongoing programs and announce the start of new ones. The Deputy Prime Minister praised Iran's official position on the establishment of stability and peace in the region, noting that in the case of multilateral assistance and consistency, the peace agenda can be implemented.

Iranian Ambassador Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri congratulated Suren Papikyan on assuming the post of Deputy Prime Minister, expressing confidence that the effective cooperation will be further expanded. The Ambassador referred to the growing dynamics of bilateral trade and cooperation of the recent months, noting that Governments of young politicians have been formed in both countries, who will work actively to deepen bilateral cooperation.

The parties discussed the situation on the Goris-Kapan road. The Deputy Prime Minister stated that the construction of alternative roads is one of the priorities of the Armenian Government. He informed that the construction of the Tatev-Kapan road is planned to be completed by the end of November, adding that the Tatev-Aghvani road is being built. The construction of Tatev-Ltsen road has also kicked off, which will give an opportunity to bypass the bendy roads of Tatev and will be much more convenient for the traffic of big trucks. The Deputy Prime Minister noted that bypass roads will be built in the Vorotan-Goris section. Touching upon the issue of the Sisian-Kajaran section of the North-South highway, Suren Papikyan informed that the project has already entered the stage of announcing a tender.

The parties also discussed issues related to the Armenian-Iranian economic cooperation, which included the spheres of road construction, energy, new technologies, and mining. Reference was made to the development of cultural relations, based on the historical similarities and friendship of the two peoples.

The forthcoming high-level reciprocal visits were highlighted, which will contribute to the deepening of cooperation in the economic sphere, the maximum use of existing opportunities, the rapid implementation of pending programs and the launch of new initiatives. In this context, the realization of the potential of the EEU market was observed and the importance of the "Persian Gulf-Black Sea" international transport corridor was emphasized as a reliable, safe transit route for all the countries involved in it.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. The Embassy of Iran in Armenia citied an article from Iranian newspaper Jam-e Jam, which refers to the accusations of president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev addressed to Iran. ARMENPRESS presents the article quoted by Iran’s Embassy on its Facebook page.  

In response to the accusations made by Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev addressed to Iran in an interview with Turkish Anadolu agency, asking ‘’Why Iran did not conduct any exercises in its northern regions during the 30 years when the surrounding regions of Karabakh were under the control of Armenians?’’, Iranian Jam-e Jam newspaper published an article today, saying,

  • Armenia has no empty dreams towards Iran’s borders, unlike Baku, Ankara, and has no such behavior
  • Armenia, unlike Azerbaijan, is not the ally of Israel
  • Armenia, unlike Azerbaijan, has not created a network of mercenary-separatists in Atropatene (northern Iran-edit.)
  • Armenia does not aim to leave Iran out of trade routes

The author also notes that ‘’the non-diplomatic behavior of Azerbaijani president and addressing a message to Iran through Turkish media is nothing but sign of being colonized’’.
