Lavrov forecasts greater trade turnover between Russia, Armenia as pandemic ebbs

TASS, Russia
May 6 2021

YEREVAN, May 6. /TASS/. The decline in foreign trade turnover between Russia and Armenia is temporary, and the volumes will increase once the coronavirus pandemic dies out, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday at a press conference following the talks with Armenia’s top diplomat Ara Ayvazyan.

"There is no doubt that as we get out of the epidemiological situation, [our] trade turnover will increase, and at a rapid pace," he predicted. The Russian minister recalled that the decline amounted to 9.6%, but the remaining volume of $2.3 bln still remains very solid.

He also shed light on "the opportunities that are opening up thanks to the work of the tripartite group of deputy prime ministers to unblock economic and transport links in the region." "When these agreements are undoubtedly reached, they will significantly boost both Russian-Armenian [trade] volume and overall interaction between Armenia and its neighbors in the region," Lavrov forecasted.

Turkey offers the Latvian Parliament to retract from “wrong step” of recognizing the Armenian Genocide

Public Radio of Armenia
May 6 2021

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has called on the Latvian Parliament to retract from the “wrong step” of recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

In a statement the Turkish Foreign Ministry called the “recognition of the 1915 events as genocide” a “null attempt to rewrite history with political motives.”

“We reject and strongly condemn this unfortunate and unlawful decision. Parliaments are not venues for history writing and judgment,” the Foreign Ministry stated.

The comments come after the Latvian Seima (Parliament) voted today to adopt a declaration recognizing and condemning the Armenian genocide.

“Instead of serving the agenda of some circles that try to create enmity from history, we invite the Latvian Parliament to take back this wrong step and to support the efforts to establish a practice of peaceful coexistence in the region, especially between the Turkish and Armenian peoples,” the Ministry stated.

The declaration adopted by the Latvian parliament respects the memory of all the victims of the Armenian Genocide, pays tribute to all the survivors, affirms that open discussions on historical issues are inextricably linked to the development of a healthy, mature democracy.

The Seima calls on the international community “to assess these historic events, to look to the future we want to build, without violence, intolerance, a future where human rights are respected, where everyone can be free, safe and secure.”

Artsakh FM raises the with UN agencies the issue of forced evictions carried out by Azerbaijan in Shushi

Panorama, Armenia
May 5 2021

Minister of Foreign Affairs of t Artsakh David Babayan sent letters on Wednesday to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and specialized bodies within United Nations regarding Azerbaijan’s policy of forced evictions in relation to the Armenian population of the town of Shoushi.

As the Artsakh Republic Foreign Ministry reported, the letters in particular state, that the forced evictions carried out by Azerbaijan in Shushi violate, directly and indirectly, the full spectrum of civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights of the Armenian population enshrined in numerous international instruments.

It is stressed that the policy of forceful reshaping of historical, cultural and architectural landscape in the occupied territories of Artsakh is blatant form of discrimination and xenophobia.

The letters underscore that the international community should stand against Azerbaijan’s unabated crimes against humanity committed against the people of Artsakh. Any activity by Azerbaijan in the occupied territories of the Republic of Artsakh, undertaken against the norms and principles of international law and in order to consolidate consequences of unlawful use of force against the self-determination of the people of Artsakh, should not be tolerated and should be condemned outright by the international community of states.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Artsakh invites to undertake appropriate measures to activate the United Nation’s international legal toolkit in a directed effort to gain unimpeded access of international specialized agencies to Artsakh to address these devastating and ongoing violations.

Ombudsman’s office releases an Ad Hoc Report on the so-called ‘Trophy park’ of killed Armenian soldiers in Baku –

Panorama, Armenia
May 6 2021

The Human Rights Defender of Armenia Arman Tatoyan reports that the Ombudsman's Office has released a new Ad Hoc Report on a park of killed Armenian soldiers and chained prisoners of war. The report discusses the so-called Trophy Park, an “exhibition-park” related to the September-November 2020 war in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) which was opened in Baku on April 12, 2021. The “Park” demonstrates wax figures of the Armenian military servicemen. All of them are presented in a degrading manner to humiliate dignity, in a way openly violating human dignity.

It is noted that this sensitive issue would cause mental pain and suffering to the families of the missing persons and captives, as well as to the Armenian society in general. It is mentioned that there are long queues to visit the “park”. Moreover, a “park-museum” of human sufferings is also open for children, even under 6 years old.

"The opening of such a “park” clearly confirms the fact of institutional hatred towards Armenians in Azerbaijan and existence of a state policy of propaganda of animosity. This policy has been consistently implemented for years, confirmed by concrete evidence," according to the document.

The monitoring of the Armenia’s Human Rights Defender’s Staff revealed also posts in Azerbaijani social media about the exhibition which only welcomed and encouraged the initiative of the Azerbaijani authorities and the mentioned materials were disseminated and still continue to be spread through Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks. The analyzed data shows a worrying trend of deepening Armenophobia in Azerbaijan.

As Tatoyan added, the report will be submitted to international structures  to showi the institutional hatred towards Armenians in Azerbaijan and existence of a years-long state policy of propaganda of hostility towards Armenians.

Lavrov responds to Aliyev’s ‘Zangezur corridor’ claims –

Panorama, Armenia
May 6 2021

"Today's talks covered not only the trilateral cooperation aimed at unblocking economic links in the region but the whole spectrum of issues emerged in the post-conflict period," Russia's FM Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Thursday, summing up talks with his Armenian counterpart.

Lavrov's remarks were made in response to Panorama.am request to comment on Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev's recent statement about the so-called 'Zangezur corridor.'

To remind, in a recent interview, Aliyev declared that their would implementing the Zangezur Corridor, whether Armenia wants it or not. ‘If Armenia wants to, we will solve this issue more easily, if it does not, we will solve it by force,’ the local source quoted him as saying.

Lavrov reminded that the mechanism of trilateral cooperation at the level of deputy prime ministers was established according to the decision of the president of Russia, Azerbaijan and the prime minister of Armenia as reflected in the January 11 trilateral statement adopted in Moscow.

"This mechanism envisages agreements which are exclusively volunteer, are based on mutual benefits and imply nothing except diplomatic agreements and decisions aimed at completely unblocking the economic links. Any issues put forward in contrary to the agreements made by the three leaders can not be accepted as an alternative to what has already been agreed," said Lavrov.
