Azerbaijani press: Absence of minefield maps makes it difficult to find mines in Azerbaijan’s liberated lands – Trend TV reports

FUZULI, Azerbaijan, Mar.31

By Jeyhun Alakbarov – Trend:

The absence of maps of minefields makes it difficult to find mines in the lands of Azerbaijan liberated from Armenian occupation, Representative of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), Madat Mammadov, told Trend’s Karabakh bureau.

He noted that Armenia has not yet given the minefield maps to Azerbaijan.

“Demining of the Azerbaijani liberated territories is the most pressing issue that is under the close scrutiny of the Azerbaijani government. The Armenian side did not provide us with maps of mined territories, which complicates the search for mines,” Mammadov said.

Turkish press: Erdoğan to visit Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh after Ramadan

We all have to continue to be there for Azerbaijan, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said at the Turkic Council meeting on Wednesday, adding that he will visit Nagorno-Karabakh’s Shusha following the holy month of Ramadan.

"It is important that we continue to be on the side of Azerbaijan with all our capabilities for the protection and recovery of Turkic structures in Karabakh," Erdoğan stated, pointing out that 63 out of 67 mosques were destroyed in the region during Armenian occupation, while churches were also ruined.

The Azerbaijani Armed Forces liberated Shusha in November after 28 years of Armenian occupation. Shusha, known as the pearl of Nagorno-Karabakh, was occupied by Armenia on May 8, 1992.

The town has a significant military value since it is located on strategic high ground about 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of the region’s capital over Khankendi (Stepanakert) and on the road linking the city with Armenian territory. Besides its strategic significance, the town is known as a symbol of Azerbaijani history and culture with many historic sites, the restoration of which has started. Many prominent Azerbaijani musicians and scholars were born in the city.

Azerbaijanis celebrated Shusha's liberation with great enthusiasm.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev in January declared Shusha the country’s cultural capital.

"I declare Shusha to be the capital of Azerbaijani culture. The city of Shusha deserves that. I think that it can be considered not only the cultural capital of Azerbaijan but also of the entire region," Aliyev said during a videoconference with Culture Minister Anar Karimov.

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been tense since 1991 when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognized as Azerbaijani territory, and seven adjacent regions.

New clashes erupted on Sept. 27, 2020, when Armenia launched attacks on civilians and Azerbaijani forces and violated humanitarian cease-fire agreements.

During the six-week-long conflict, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages.

The two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement on Nov. 10, 2020, to end fighting and work toward a comprehensive resolution.

The president further emphasized the need to continue to support Turkish Cypriots. "I believe that we can bring Turkish Cypriots to the level they deserve through combining our powers."

Erdoğan also touched upon the growing significance of the Turkic Council, saying that the council needs to be called an international organization, the decision of which could be made during the upcoming summit in Istanbul.

"We hope to hold the eighth summit of the council in Istanbul on Nov. 12, 2021, as far as pandemic conditions allow," Erdoğan added, stating that the importance of the council has enhanced in the face of the changes the world is undergoing.

Saying that the Turkic Council has finalized its institutionalization within 12 years, Erdoğan stated that there is rising demand to participate in the council as observers.

He also stated that Turkey allocated a historical building for the use of the council's secretariat in Istanbul.

YEREVAN, MARCH 30, ARMENPRESS. A Security Council session chaired by Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan took place on March 30. As ARMENPRESS was informed from the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, Pashinyan said at the beginning of the session, ‘’As a result of the well-known developments, the security environment surrounding Armenia and Artsakh  has undergone significant transformations  and we have to continuously evaluate the new challenges that we face in this situation’’.

Speaking about the long-lasting blockade of Armenia, PM Pashinyan noted that it has alienated Armenia from the region to some extent, and Armenia has only one land route to its strategic partner, which is greatly dependant on the weather conditions. ‘’This results in numerous challenges, including security challenge’’, Pashinyan said.

‘’In this new situation we have to assess the opportunities that can be used for eliminating the blockade of Armenia, but on the other hand we have to record that this process cannot take place at the expense of Armenia’s vital interests, but the opposite, we must be able to fully protect our interests, the interests of Artsakh, of course, being ready for some kind of cooperation. In general, opening the communications is one of the key topics we are going to discuss today. The issue of important and interesting, but has numerous nuances that we have to consider.

We must be able to make decisions that will ensure the long-term, sustainable development, and in some sense we are also responsible for the long-term and sustainable development of the region’’, Pashinyan said.

YEREVAN, MARCH 31, ARMENPRESS. Excavations are planned for September at the Metsamor archaeological site, the remains of an Iron Age city and fortress 35km south-west from Yerevan.

The Protection Service of Historical-Cultural Reserve-Museums and Historical Environment, a governmental agency which has initiated the excavations, plans to cooperate with specialists from Poland.

Professor Ashot Piliposyan, a senior scientist of the agency and the co-leader of the Armenian-Polish team of the site, told ARMENPRESS that according to preliminary arrangements the experts from Poland will visit Armenia in May to make preparations. “But if the situation were to get more complicated due to the coronavirus pandemic and our partners aren’t able to come, we will anyway start the work only with Armenian experts,” he said. He said they’ve found traces of a mausoleum during earlier excavations and they will further study the site.

“I’d really want our Polish partners to be able to come because in case of joint work they are really supporting us especially in doing C 14 analysis, something which is difficult to do in Armenia because of financial issues,” he said, referring to the radiocarbon dating procedure.

All findings from the site are being restored and then put on display at the eponymous Metsamor Historical-Archaeological Reserve-Museum. Piliposyan said that in the first three months of 2021 alone the museum saw as many visitors as in 2020 altogether. The visitors were mostly Russian tourists, he said.
