Armenia Startup Academy Traction Programme Batch 1

On September 30 at 8PM EVN time, Armenia Startup Academy is going to hold a Demo Day

The European Union and Viva-MTS supported the implementation of Armenia Startup Academy Traction Programme Batch 1. As Viva-MTS reported, this 10-week mentorship-based programmewas launched earlier this year to help companies at a post-prototype stage with early traction accelerate their growth and raise their first or follow-on rounds. The programmeis implemented by Catalyst Foundationand supported by the European Union’sEU4Business “Technology Development for Armenia” project implemented by GIZ. Viva-MTS, Armenia’s leading telecommunications operator joins the initiative as a corporate partner and supporter.

This Demo Day provides a different format compared to the previous ones. The novel additions are the following:

 ● After each startup’s pitch, the founders will answer the questions of a specially-invitedInvestor Panel – representatives from global VC firms. This new format promises to make the Demo Day more engaging as well as provide a platform for relationship building with interested investors.

 ● Those investors, who want to learn more about the startups, can register for “Investor Access” (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScpOqF2soWK4Nz-TR6Zc5AGbXbO8LV-4DrzRvQ_suV-QLH81w/viewform). The registered investors will not only receive more information about the startups they are interested in but also have an opportunity to hold one-on-one meetings with the founders after the Demo Day.

The pilot batch of the Traction programme includes 9startups, which offer innovative solutions in such diverse fields as EduTech, logistics, HR, marketing, and more. These 9 teams have gone through 10 weeks of intensive learning and mentorship programme working closely with Startup Academy’s in-house mentors, sales and growth-hacking coaches, as well as receiving ad hoc consultations from industry experts.

For the safety concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic, the Demo Day will be held virtually. Everyone interested can join the livestream via the Armenian Startup Academy Facebook page and Hero House  .

Paris hosts tribute to French-Armenian politician Patrick Devedjian

Public Radio of Armenia
Sept 26 2020

Six months after French Armenian politician Patrick Devedjian’s death, the Hauts-de-Seine department, of which he was president, paid him a strong tribute on Friday. Many political figures were in attendance to pay tribute to Devedjian’s memory during this long day of remembrance, Le Figaro reports.

Many of them met at 10:30 am in the cathedral of Nanterre. Attending the mass were former President Nicolas Sarkozy, former Prime Ministers François Fillon and Jean-Pierre Raffarin and others.

Patrick Devedjian’s wife and two of the four sons spoke during the mass, celebrated according to the Armenian rite in the presence of an Armenian choir, with a reading of the same gospel as that which had been chosen for Jacques Chirac (gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew).

The main event was held at Seine Musicale, which now bears his name. The place was one of the great projects of Patrick Devedjian. The site was built under a partnership contract signed in July 2013 between the General Council and the Tempo Île Seguin group. President Devedjian laid the foundation stone there on July 5, 2014.

The event was attended by Georges Siffredi, successor of Patrick Devedjian at the head of the department, many elected officials from Ile-de-France and Hauts-de-Seine. The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo was forced to cancel her participation because of the news of stabbing attacks in the 11th arrondissement.

The chairman of the Hauts-de-Seine departmental council and former minister Patrick Devedjian died from the consequences of the coronavirus on March 29.

Tsarukyan’s arrest ‘deafened public outcry’ over ‘secret’ Armenian-Azerbaijani processes – politician

Tert.am, Armenia
Sept 26 2020
With the political decision to arrest Gagik Tsarukyan under the pretext of vote-buying in the 2017 parliamentary election, the Armenian authorities practically managed to deafen the public outcry over the reported secret talks with Azerbaijan in defiance of our national interest, says Artur Ghazinyan, the leader of the opposition One Armenia party.

In a public post on Facebook, the politician slams the criminal case against the Prosperous Armenia party's (PAP) leader as an attempt to "tone down" the noise over the recent "confessions".

He also warns of "extremely dangerous" processes over Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), highlighting the national security and territorial integrity threats to the two Armenian republics.

"At this critical moment, the travelling circus – with its clowns and journalists provoking intrigues – will go away from Armenia, leaving us with a Fatherland at the threshold of a calamity, which we will protect again, win and rebuild," Ghazinyan says.

Pashinyan confirmed ‘secret talks’ with Azerbaijani leader

Tert.am, Armenia
Sept 25 2020
Pashinyan confirmed 'secret talks' with Azerbaijani leader
With his statement made at the meeting with the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) parliament speaker in Yerevan, Nikol Pashinyan practically confirmed that he is in secret negotiations with the Azerbaijani leader, political analyst Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan said on Facebook today, commenting on the remarks voiced by the prime minister.

"Nikol Pashinyan actually confirmed the reports released by the Azerbaijani media since yesterday that there are secret talks between him and [Azerbaijani President Ilham] Aliyev. [He reaffirmed] that he asked for Aliyev's help in the domestic political campaign in Armenia …

"That man stated plainly that the Azerbaijanis expose 'confidential information'. And then he recommended that the Azerbaijani colleagues abandon the scenario because 'once we enter into that domain,  I am afraid the domestic political situation in Azerbaijan will deteriorate dramatically.'

"Do you see now what Pashinyan is afraid of? Lest the situation in Azerbaijan should deteriorate dramatically …" reads the statement on his public profile.

Authorities ‘attempting to silence opposition’ through dirty vendetta – Prosperous Armenia party condemns leader’s arrest

Tert.am, Armenia

Authorities 'attempting to silence opposition' through dirty vendetta – Prosperous Armenia party condemns leader's arrest
The opposition Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) has released a statement condemning the authorities for exercising a "political vendetta" against their leader.

The political force, which formerly allied with the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) in a coalition government, blames the current regime for attempts "to silence opponents" through a dirty revenge.

A Yerevan district court ruled to sanction Gagik Tsarykyan's arrest late on Friday, almost three months after  charging the businessman-politician wth vote-buying. The prosecution was initiated after Tsarukyan's parliament speech criticizing the current government for failures and calling for its "100% resignation".

The party dismisses the criminal case as a politically motivated vendetta.

"The court presented no justified argument as to how Gagik Tsarukyan could have possibly obstructed the inquest four months being formally charged. What happened is obviously a political reckoning against the leader of the largest opposition parliamentary force. Gagik Tsarukyan is obviously a political prisoner from now on.

"With their obvious downfalls and failures in all areas, the authorities, under the leadership of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, are attempting to silence the opposition through a dirty reckoning by ordering the most servile judge to arrest Gagik Tsarukyan," reads part of the statement.

Accusing the governing elite for persecutions against political opponents, the PAP also calls the Armenian society's attention to the pressing socio-economic and national security challenges, promising to continue its fight (in collaboration with allies) for the protection of the national values and interests.

Gagik Tsarukyan detained for two months

Public Radio of Armenia
Sept 26 2020

Leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party Gagik Tsarukyan will be remanded in custody. The court of general jurisdiction announced the decision at 11 pm today.

Yerem Sargsyan, one of Tsarukyan’s defenders, said the court cited the risk that he could obstruct the investigation as a basis for the decision.

His lawyer Samvel Dilbandyan described the decision as “illegal and baseless” and said it would be appealed at a higher court.

Gagik Tsarukyan ihas been chargd with vote buying under Article 154.2 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (Forcing the voter to divulge the results of the ballot, checking the ballot list to reveal the results of the vote, entering the ballot booth (room) as well as breaching the confidentiality of the voting otherwise).

The National Assembly voted in June to strip Gagik Tsarukyan of parliamentary immunity and sanction his arrest.
