Armenia to send 6-strong freestyle wrestling squad to World C’ship

Head coach of the team Habetnak Kurghinyan has told Mediamax Sport that there are no injuries in the squad and the training goes as planned.

“We selected the squad based on the results the athletes had in different tournaments in the course of the year. We held the last but one training camp in Sochi, jointly with the Russian, Mongolian and German teams. Now we’re making the last preparations in Yerevan to perform well in the World Championship,” he said.

The squad who will represent Armenia and compete for medals and Olympic quotas includes Arsen Harutyunyan (57kg), Vazgen Tevanyan (65kg), Varuzhan Kajoyan (74kg), Grigor Grigoryan (79kg), Hovhannes Mkhitaryan (86kg) and Levan Berianidze (125kg).

The squad will travel to Nur-Sultan on September 17 and enter into the competition on the following day.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
