Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, has replied to the
letter by Naira Zohrabyan, head of the Armenian Parliament Committee
for European Integration, over the death of Armenian peasant Karen
Petrosyan in Azeri captivity. The letter was addressed to Martin
Schulz several months ago.

In his reply letter, Mr. Schulz, particularly, says that he looked
into the circumstances of Petrosyan’s death and viewed the video record
demonstrating how the peasant was treated in captivity. Martin Schulz
expressed his astonishment at the video and the fact that Baku had
been refusing to hand Petrosyan’s body to Armenia for three weeks.

The President of the European Parliament urged transparent inquiry
into the incident and independent judicial examination to reveal the
true reasons of Petrosyan’s death.

Further in his reply, Mr. Schulz says that the situation in the
Karabakh conflict remains tense and calls on the parties to observe
the international legal norms with regards to captives irrespective
of the negotiation process for resolution of the conflict.

Karen Petrosyan died in Azerbaijan’s captivity from what official Baku
qualifies as acute cardiovascular deficiency. However, the Armenian
party is disposed to think that the man died from tortures and
inhumane treatment. According to unofficial data, Petrosyan crossed
the Armenian-Azerbaijani border while drunk and died on the next day
of captivity.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
