The president of Armenia’s National Assembly praised the army as the
independent republic’s major achievement as he visited a military
unit in the southern region of Vayots Dzor on Monday.

Meeting soldiers and officers, Galust Sahakyan highlighted the
military’s high role and significance, stressing also the importance of
the society’s trust. “Our society unconditionally trusts the army and
seriously treats the Armenian soldier. We are a soldier-loving nation,
so glory and honor to our youth,” the state news Agency Armenpress
quotes the speaker as saying.

Sahakyan said he sees that the Armenian army is now fully ready to
protect the nation’s peace, adding that the new generation seems to
be even more resolute. “So no wonder that the first toast proposed at
festive tables is for the soldier. And whichever class of the Armenian
society you ask what the biggest achievement of the independence years
is, all will first name the army and soldier. And that’s really so.

And we have the occasion to be proud here. I wish to thank our soldiers
for giving us spirit every time we are in military positions.

Our visits are aimed at encouraging not only our soldiers but also
ourselves, as we see the valorous soldiers who are ready to protect
their fatherland at any cost. These visits give power and might to us
too. The strengthening of our state begins from these positions, and
we are very proud to see the brave Armenian soldier standing here,”
he added.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
