Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan to meet in Sochi next week

3 August 2014 – 10:59am

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan are going to meet in the Russian city of Sochi next week,
Armenia’s Prime Minister Ovik Obramyan is quoted as saying.

“The meeting is scheduled to be held in Sochi on August 8 or 9. We
hope we will manage to reach an important agreement,” the head of the
Armenian cabinet is quoted as saying.

The last meeting was held in Vienna in November 2013. The talks
resulted in no agreement and no official statement.

Reports concerning a possible meeting of the two presidents came amid
increasing tensions on the Azerbaijani-Armenian front line. Nine
Azerbaijani soldiers have died in the last several days.

The Azerbaijani authorities accuse the Armenian forces of trying to
move on to Azerbaijani positions. Armenia returns the accusations.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
