The Armenian Catholic archbishop of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city,
has told the Fides news agency that rebel forces have surrounded the
city and are targeting churches.

Archbishop Boutros Marayati said that he and his Orthodox counterpart
have “found homes and schools destroyed, and many people have sought
refuge in churches, which are also targeted.”

Rebel forces have also gained control of the city’s water supply and
have cut off water to the city for days at a time. “In our churches
and mosques, in order to meet the emergency, we have reactivated
ancient wells that provide access to groundwater faults,” said
Archbishop Marayati.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
