Historian: Construction of cafe near Garni Temple is illegal

The project to build a cafe near Garni Temple is illegal, historian
Vahe Atanesyan told journalists on Friday.

“The local community gave no permission to it. This cafe will not
boost tourism in the area but will become just one more public
catering facility with cheap music and lots of rubbish around. And
this will hardly be good for the temple. They should better build a
Garni museum there,” Atanesyan said.

The project has caused a wave of protests all over Armenia, but
Culture Minister of Armenia Hasmik Poghosyan supports it. “If it
doesn’t affect the cultural layer, why not?” she said.
