Armenia launches new pension system

6 January 2014 – 11:37am

Armenia adopted a new pension system on January 1, according to the
new law on pensions signed by President Serzh Sargsyan on December 28.

5% of salaries in Armenia will be allocated to a private pension fund.
The government will add an equal amount of money.
Armenians earning over 500,000 drams (about $1,233) will have state
allocations worth a maximum of 25,000 drams (about $62)

The public was outraged by the new system. A protest started in
Yerevan on December 14. Activists dressed as Santa Claus and demanded
the system to be abolished.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
