YEREVAN PRESS CLUB WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

SEPTEMBER 13-19, 2013

HIGHLIGHTS:

CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS INSTITUTED UPON CASE OF CIVIC ACTIVISTS

LITIGATION BETWEEN FOUNDERS OF “ES? YES!” AND “ES EM.” MAGAZINE OVER
TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT

CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS INSTITUTED UPON CASE OF CIVIC ACTIVISTS

On September 14, Kentron Police Department of Yerevan instituted criminal
proceedings over the attack against Haykak Arshamian, Project Coordinator of
Yerevan Press Club, and Suren Saghatelian, Board member of Transparency
International Anti-Corruption Center, on charges of Articles 113
(“Infliction of willful medium-gravity damage to health”) and 118
(“Battery”) of the RA Criminal Code. As we have reported, in the evening of
September 5, Haykak Arshamian and Suren Saghatelian were brutally beaten up.
The two activists were hospitalized with bruises and fractures. On September
10 – only on the fifth day following the assault – Haykak Arshamian and
Suren Saghatelian underwent forensic examination. The statement
disseminated on September 6 in connection
with the acts of violence against the Armenian civic activists and signed by
more than 4 dozens of civil society organizations, particularly noted that
Yerevan Press Club and Transparency International Anti-Corruption Center,
the representatives of which were brutally attacked, are largely involved in
the activities of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, meanwhile,
civic activists Haykak Arshamian and Suren Saghatelian are public figures
and carry out their social activities within a legal framework. The authors
of the statement assessed the incident as intimidation against NGOs,
independent media, public figures and active citizens, who raise voice of
protest against the Armenian authorities and urged “the civil society and
all the free citizens to remain strong, not to retreat before the hired
thugs and their patrons, to continue the struggle for their personal rights
and freedoms”. Statements, condemning the incident, were also made by the
Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks, the Steering
Committee of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum and the Amnesty
International (see details in YPC Weekly Newsletter, September 6-12, 2013
).

On September 13, the EU Delegation to Armenia urged the Armenian authorities
to “take up immediate and firm steps to make the perpetrators accountable
without delay”, and recalled that “respecting democratic principles and
fundamental human rights and freedoms are still major elements of EU-Armenia
bilateral agenda”.

LITIGATION BETWEEN FOUNDERS OF “ES? YES!” AND “ES EM.” MAGAZINE OVER
TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT

On September 12, “PanArm Publishing House” CJSC, founder of “Es? Yes!”
magazine, disseminated a press release regarding the lawsuit, filed against
“Ani Kochar Production” LLC, founder of “Es Em.” (“It’s Me.”) magazine. As
stated in the press release, “PanArm Publishing House” is the owner of the
trademark, copyright and related property rights to “Es? Yes!” magazine (as
approved in the certificate of August 30, 2011). After learning that the
magazine “Es Em.” (Ani Kochar is the Chief Editor) was issued under a name
that, according to “PanArm Publishing House”, is confusingly similar to “Es?
Yes!” the publishing house decided to appeal the court. On September 10, the
Court of General Jurisdiction of Ajapnyak and Davitashen Administrative
Districts of Yerevan submitted into consideration the lawsuit claiming to
bind “Ani Kochar Production” not to infringe the trademark and the rights of
“PanArm Publishing House” related to it. At the same time, the plaintiff
petitioned the Court to prohibit further publication and distribution of the
magazine “Es Em.” – as a measure to secure the claim. The petition was
granted.

According to the press release, “Es? Yes!” magazine was founded by the “CS
Publishing House” CJSC in 2006 (see YPC Weekly Newsletter, May 12-18, 2006
). In July 2012, “CS Publishing
House” changed its name to “PanArm Publishing House” and joined the
“PanArmenian Media Group” holding. Since the day of the foundation of “Es?
Yes!” Ani Kochar was appointed as acting editor-in-chief of the magazine.
Later on, she assumed the post of Chief Editor and worked there until March
1, 2011. In September 2011, “PanArm Publishing House” signed a license
agreement with “Ani Kochar Production” LLC authorizing the use of the “Es?
Yes!” trademark. In August 2013, the contract was terminated, about which
“Ani Kochar Production” received a prior written notice.

In her turn, Ani Kochar presented her position in an interview published in
“Chorrord Inknishkhanutiun” on September 13, 2013,

“I Am Not the One Who Gives up Easily”. She particularly stated that the
dispute with “PanArm Publishing House”, which consequently brought to her
dismissal, arose because of her active civic engagement and independent
stance (Ani Kochar was in the electoral list of “Barev, Yerevan” bloc at the
May 6, 2013 elections to Yerevan Council of Elders). According to her, the
editorial office of “Es Em.” learned about the lawsuit only on September 12,
when the booth keepers informed that they had been presented with a document
prohibiting the sale of the magazine.

Press Club is required.

PRELATE TO PARTICIPATE IN BISHOPS’ SYNOD IN ETCHMIADZIN

Earlier this week, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate,
departed for Armenia to participate in the Armenian Apostolic Church
Bishops’ Synod from September 24 to 27, 2013.
The Synod will convene with the blessings of and presided over by
H.H. Karekin II, Catholicos of all Armenians, and H.H. Aram I, Catholicos of
the Great House of Cilicia. It will bring together Armenian Apostolic
bishops from around the world.
The Prelate will return in early October.

ARCHPRIEST FR. HRANT YERETZIAN APPOINTED SECOND PASTOR OF ST. GARABED CHURCH
OF HOLLYWOOD

H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and the joint
Religious and Executive Councils hereby announce the appointment of
Archpriest Fr. Hrant Yeretzian as the second pastor of St. Garabed Church in
Hollywood. Fr. Hrant will be serving alongside Parish Pastor, Archpriest
Fr. Vicken Vassilian. He will celebrate his first Divine Liturgy on Sunday,
October 6, 2013.
Fr. Hrant has served within the Western Prelacy for nearly two
decades as Pastor of Forty Martyrs Church in Orange County and Holy Cross
Cathedral in Montebello. Prior to arriving at the Western Prelacy, Fr.
Hrant served within the Prelacies of the Eastern United States and Canada.
We wish Fr. Hrant success in his new ministry.

THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
IN MONTEBELLO

On Sunday, September 15, 2013, the Feast of the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross was celebrated in Prelacy Churches with Divine Liturgy, the
Blessing of the Four Corners of the Earth service, and the blessing of
basil. The Feast is also the name-day of Holy Cross Cathedral of
Montebello. Thus, on this occasion, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Prelate celebrated Divine Liturgy, delivered the sermon, and conducted the
blessing of madagh and basil at Holy Cross Cathedral.
Upon the wish expressed by the Syrian Armenian Relief Fund, and by
the decision of the spiritual leaders of the Armenian Apostolic, Catholic,
and Evangelical Churches, this day was designated Day of Prayer for Syria.
By the ordinance of the Prelate, “Der Voghormya” (Lord have mercy) prayers
were offered in all Prelacy Churches for the safety and peace of the Syrian
people and the Syrian-Armenian community.
As the choir sang the “Hrashapar” hymn, the Prelate entered the
Cathedral and to begin the Liturgy. Dean of the Cathedral, Very Rev. Fr.
Muron Aznikian, participated in the service. Parish Pastor Rev. Fr. Ashod
Kambourian, and former Pastor Archpriest Fr. Nareg Pehlivanian, assisted at
the altar.
Prior to his sermon, the Prelate first gave thanks to God for the
day and the opportunity to collectively celebrate last of the five major
feasts, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and the name-day of the Cathedral.
Addressing Fr. Muron, His Eminence wished him success in his new duties as
Dean of the Cathedral, conveying his expectation that he will work alongside
the Pastor, Board of Trustees, and all affiliated bodies to ensure that Holy
Cross Cathedral grows in strength and numbers and continues its ninety-year
history. The Prelate also greeted Principal of Mesrobian School, Mr. David
Ghoogasian, who was assisting in the service, wishing him and the Mesrobian
family a successful and productive school year. He expressed joy and pride
that enrollment has increased by ten percent this year, and urged the
community to continue to work together and support Mesrobian School, “for
great things can be achieved with love, unity, and harmony.”
Noting that the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is also
the day on which Sunday Schools resume, citing the passage from Proverbs
22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will
not depart from it,” the Prelate spoke of just how important Christian
education is, for it molds our youth to grow to be good, faithful Christians
and to follow Christ and His commandments with total devotion and love.
Thus, he commended the Sunday School director and teachers for their
dedication to this important task.
The Prelate began his sermon by giving a brief overview on the
history of the Feast. He explained that in the 7th century, the Persians
had confiscated the sacred relic, which the Emperor Heraclius was eventually
victorious in recovering through a series of battles. Upon the Emperor’s
triumphant return to Constantinople, the people, including the Armenians,
greeted him with great enthusiasm, praising and exalting the Cross he had
recovered. The Armenian people had contributed to the battles and shed
their blood for the return of the Cross, and they also witnessed the sacred
relic as it was being transported from Constantinople to Jerusalem via their
lands. That is why the Armenian people hold this feast in such high regard,
designating it as one of the five great feasts of the church. “Our
forefathers rejoiced and triumphed in the return of the Cross because they
comprehended its profound significance and symbolism,” stated the Prelate.

His Eminence then spoke on the true meaning of the Cross, as the
symbol of God’s justice, wisdom, love, power, and peace, and the promise of
redemption and salvation. By sending His only Son as a substitute for our
sins, through the Cross, God revealed his unbound love towards mankind; He
made it known that He is the only path to salvation; He displayed His mighty
power over sin and death; He reestablished the peace that was once lost
because of sin.
“Today, more than ever, we are in great need of the peace of the
Cross. All across the world, and in the Middle East especially, love and
peace has been replaced by violence and injustice. For the past 2 ½ years,
our brothers and sisters in Syria have been living a nightmare with no end
in sight. Day by day, their circumstances are becoming increasingly
difficult as the situation continues to deteriorate,” stated the Prelate.
His Eminence called on the faithful to pray for the watchful Eye and the
protective Hand of the Lord to safeguard the innocent Syrian people caught
in the crossfire of the civil war, for the Holy Spirit to bring some
semblance of peace and comfort to the people who are struggling for basic
necessities each and every day, and for God’s compassion and mercy to fill
the hearts of world leaders, so that they can work together to restore peace
to a broken world.
At the conclusion of Divine Liturgy, the Prelate conducted the
Antasdan service, (Blessing of the Four Corners of the Earth), a ceremony
where the four corners of the church are blessed as a sign of the
sanctification of the world, and also blessed basil which was then
distributed to the faithful.
The Prelate was then led in a procession to “Bagramian” Hall where
the blessing of madagh took place, in memory of departed church servants and
loved ones.
Following the blessing of tables, Fr. Muron welcomed the guests gave
an overview of the Cathedral’s current and upcoming endeavors, and invited
all those present and the community at large to participate in the
fulfillment of the Cathedral’s mission.
The Prelate delivered the closing message, in which he once again
congratulated the parish community on their name-day, and urged all to work
together in the spirit of love and harmony for splendor of Holy Cross
Cathedral and Mesrobian School. The celebration concluded with the
Prelate’s benediction.

PRELATE ATTENDS FAREWELL RECEPTION FOR
CONSUL GENERAL OF ARMENIA

As the Honorable Grigor Hovhannissian’s term as Consul General of
Armenia in Los Angeles officially came to an end on Friday, September 13, a
reception was held at the Consulate General in Glendale to bid farewell to
the Consul General and wish him success in his new mission as Ambassador of
Armenia to Mexico.
The Prelate attended the reception and conveyed his blessings and
will wishes to the Consul General and his wife Victoria.

** Celebrating Armenia’s Independence
————————————————————
Saturday, September 21, marks the 22nd anniversary of the
establishment of the Republic of Armenia. Celebrations are planned in
the homeland and in Armenian communities across the diaspora.

The rebirth of the Armenian homeland is one of the most momentous
developments in the history of the Armenian people. Armenia’s citizens
voted for independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991,
and the resulting free republic became a member of the United Nations
on March 2, 1992.

To mark this 22nd anniversary, the Eastern Diocese and Armenia’s UN
Mission are jointly sponsoring a bicycle ride down the East Side of
Manhattan on Saturday, September 21. Participants will meet at
St. Vartan Cathedral (Second Ave. at 34th St., New York) at 10 a.m.,
have a flag-raising ceremony at 10:15, and start the ride at 10:30,
returning to the cathedral by 12 noon for refreshments.

The ride-led by Armenia’s UN ambassador Garen Nazarian, cathedral dean
Fr. Mamigon Kiledjian, and Diocesan vicar Fr. Simeon Odabashian-is
free and open to the public. To view a flyer with information on
reservations and other important details, click here

On Sunday, September 22, parishes of the Eastern Diocese will conduct

His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All
Armenians, presided over the consecration of the newly-built Cathedral
of the Holy Transfiguration, located in Moscow, Russia, on September
17. The occasion included opening ceremonies for the cathedral’s
adjacent cultural complex.

The mammoth cathedral and its surrounding buildings will serve as the

whose Primate Bishop Yezras Nersisyan led the seven-year construction
effort, and played a prominent role in the consecration
service. Catholicos Karekin II raised Bishop Yezras to the rank of
`archbishop’ on the occasion.

His Holiness Kirill I, the Russian Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and
All Russia, attended the September 17 ceremony, accompanied by clergy
of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Armenia’s President Serge Sargsyan, Nagorno-Karabagh President Bako
Sahakyan, dignitaries of the Armenian and Russian governments, and
cathedral benefactors were also present.

Among the high-ranking figures from the worldwide Armenian Church were
Eastern Diocese Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Western Diocese
Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, United Kingdom Primate Bishop
Vahan Hovhanessian, and Eastern Diocese ecumenical director Archbishop
Vicken Aykazian.

During an inspirational day on Sunday, September 15, more than 200
faithful friends gathered at the Diocesan Center in New York to
celebrate the 45th anniversary of the consecration of St. Vartan
Cathedral.

Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian celebrated the badarak on
the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. During a special
requiem service, the names of more than 150 departed St. Vartan
godfathers and Cathedral Project committee members were read aloud.

A procession led by members of the Knights of Vartan brought the relic
of St. Vartan the Brave into the cathedral. A gift of His Holiness
Karekin II to the Eastern Diocese, the 1500-year-old relic was
unveiled to the American public for the first time during the service.

The congregation-which included numerous descendants of the original
godfathers and founders of the cathedral-adjourned to Haik and Alice
Kavookjian auditorium for a celebratory luncheon, which featured
musical performances, recitations, and inspiring remarks by the
keynote speaker, Prof. Mark Movsesian. Armenia’s UN Ambassador Garen

** Philadelphia Holds Sunday School Workshop
————————————————————

Philadelphia-area parishes took part in a five-hour workshop titled
=80=9CWhat Every Sunday School Teacher Needs to Know’ on Saturday,
September 14. Greta Wiley and Alice Pakhtigian, co-superintendents of
the St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Sunday School of Wynnewood, PA, hosted
the day, working with Nancy Hovnanian, superintendent of the Holy
Trinity Sunday School of Cheltenham, to bring together 16 teachers
from their schools.

Elise Antreassian, coordinator of Christian Education at the Diocese,
facilitated the gathering, along with Nancy Basmajian. `You don’t have
to be a teacher by profession to be a great Sunday School teacher. But
there are approaches, understandings, and a core of knowledge that you
do need to `own’ in order to be an on-target teacher,’ said the
facilitators.

The workshop included a quiz on `Basic Armenian Christian literacy,’
an introduction to best practices in using curriculum, and a lesson
planning exercise. The day ended with an open discussion and a
spiritual self-assessment, confirming that a commitment to one’s faith
journey is essential for a great Sunday School teacher.

Further workshops are being scheduled throughout the Diocese for the
2013-14 academic year.

22nd ANNIVERSARY OF ARMENIAN INDEPENDENCE

This Saturday, September 21, is the 22nd anniversary of the
Independent Republic of Armenia. God bless Armenia.

`…Thanks to God, we once again have a free and independent
Armenia. However, it is not enough to simply take pride and joy in
this fact. It is crucial that we bring our active participation to the
sacred work
of building the nation and the state. It is true that we are citizens
of different countries and as such we have a primary responsibility to
fulfill our civil obligations in those countries. Yet, we have a
homeland that belongs to us and keeps reminding us that we all belong
to one nation. While we
are not physically living in Armenia, Armenia must become a living
reality
in our lives. … Helping Armenia is not a humanitarian task. It is a
sacred vocation of each and every Armenian, since we all belong to
Armenia whether we are living there or elsewhere.”

His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia

Hrair Hawk Khatcherian holds a copy of `One Church, One Nation,’ as he
speaks about his encounters during his travels to fulfill his
promise to photograph every Armenian Church in the world.

A NEW MONUMENTAL BOOK BY HAWK

A new book, that has taken many years of work to complete, was
presented last Sunday at St. Illuminator’s Cathedral. The book, `One
Church, One Nation,’ is a result of a promise make by the book’s
author, noted photographer Hrair Hawk Khatcherian, twenty years ago.

Introduced by Rev. Fr. Mesrob Lakissian, pastor of the Cathedral, Hawk
explained the events that led to this day. In 1993 he was diagnosed
with terminal lung cancer and given only ten days to live. Khatcherian
described how as he contemplated this grim prognosis, he made a
promise to God that if He
allowed him to live, he would photograph every Armenian church in
every country in the world. At the same time, in the same hospital,
his mother-in-law, Araxie, was given a diagnosis of advanced breast
cancer. `She died holding my hand and she passed along the rest of her
life to me,’ Hawk told the audience. `I had ten days to live, not ten
days to die. That was twenty years ago. I’m still around.’
Appropriately, this book is dedicated in loving memory of Araxie.

A lively and engaging speaker, Khatcherian described the ambitious
project
and his many journeys that took him around the world in fulfillment of
his
promise. The audience had many questions for him that he happily
answered.
Afterwards he signed copies of this newest volume as well as his other
books that were available for purchase.

BIBLE READINGS

Bible readings for Sunday, September 22, Second Sunday of the
Exaltation (Eve of the Fast of the Holy Cross of Varak), are: Isaiah
14:3-17; 2 Corinthians 10:18-11:10; Mark 10:1-12.

He left that place and went to the region of Judea and beyond the
Jordan. And crowds again gathered around him; and, as was his custom,
he again taught them.

Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, `Is it lawful for
a man to divorce his wife?’ He answered them, `What did Moses command
you?’ They said, `Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of
dismissal and to divorce her.’ But Jesus said to them, `Because of
your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the
beginning of creation, `God made them male and
female.’ For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and
be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they
are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined
together, let no one separate.’

Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He
said
to them, `Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits
adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries
another, she commits adultery.’ (Mark 10:1-12)

PAREGENTAN OF THE HOLY CROSS OF VARAK

This Sunday, September 22, is the Paregentan (Eve) of the Fast of the
Holy
Cross of Varak. Monday to Friday are fasting days leading up to next
Sunday, September 29, when the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak will
be commemorated.

ST. SHOUSHAN

Next Tuesday, September 24, the Armenian Church celebrates Princess
Shoushan, daughter of Vartan Mamigonian and great-granddaughter of
Sahag Bartev. She was educated under the tutelage of St. Sahag and her
mother, Sahaganoosh. Her father’s life and martyrdom influenced her to
become a devout and faithful Christian. Her birth name was Varteny,
but she was called Shoushan because of her extraordinary piety. She
was married to Vazken, a son
of a Georgian king, and had three sons and a daughter. After the death
of her father-in-law, her husband became power-hungry, went to Persia,
renounced the Christian faith and returned to Georgia with another
wife, and tried
to force Shoushan to renounce her Christian faith. Even after years of
imprisonment and torture she refused to renounce the faith for which
her father had fought so valiantly.

THIS WEEK IN ARMENIAN HISTORY

Death of Manuk Abeghian (September 25, 1944)

Manuk Abeghian was one of the most important scholars of Armenian
Studies in the first half of the twentieth century. At the conclusion
of his remarkable career, he became one of the founding members of the
Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia in 1943.

Abeghian was born on March 17, 1865 in the village of Astapat, in the
historical Armenian province of Nakhichevan (today in territory of
Azerbaijan).
He was the son of an agriculturist. After his initial studies in the
school of the monastery of Karmir Vank, in 1876 he entered the
Kevorkian Seminary of Etchmiadzin and graduated in 1885. He taught for
many years in schools
of Shushi (Karabagh) and Tiflis. In 1893 he went to Europe and became
an auditor at the German universities of Jena, Leipzig, and Berlin, as
well as in the University of Paris. In 1898 he was awarded his
doctorate at the University of Jena, where he defended a dissertation
on the ancient Armenian beliefs.

He returned to the Caucasus and was a teacher in his alma mater, the
Kevorkian Seminary, until 1914. Then, he moved to Tiflis, where he
taught at the
Nersisian Lyceum until 1918.

He moved to Armenia in 1921 and became a professor at Yerevan State
University; he also was the dean of the Faculty of History and
Literature from 1923-1925. In 1935 he earned a second doctorate, this
time in Armenian philology.

Abeghian was a foremost scholar in a variety of disciplines of
Armenian Studies. He was a pioneering figure in the study of Armenian
mythology. Besides recording several variants of the Armenian national
epics David of Sassoun, he was the author of its first specialized
study (1889). Together with his colleague Garo Melik-Ohanjanian, they
both prepared a three-volume edition of all available variants of the
epics (published between 1936 and 1951). Abeghian was also one of the
authors of an integral version of the epics, which condensed all the
variants into one single text (1939). He also published critical
editions of Armenian popular songs and medieval poetry.

Among his major works was the two-volume History of Ancient Armenian
Literature (1944-1945), which was left unfinished because of his
death. Many of his studies were published in a collection of eight
volumes between 1966 and 1985.

Abeghian’s name was linked to the reform of Armenian orthography in
1922. After the sovietization of Armenia, the new regime started a
policy
aimed at the simplification of Armenian orthography, whose ultimate
purpose was to eliminate the Armenian alphabet and replace it with
Latin script. In 1921, Abeghian presented his personal views as a
report in a conference organized by the Commissariat (Ministry) of
Education. The same report was used a year later by the Commissariat,
without consulting with Abeghian, to
decree, on March 4, 1922, the reform of the orthography. For this
reason, it is common to call the reformed orthography with the name of
`Abeghian spelling.’ The excesses in this reform motivated a new
change
in the Soviet Armenian orthography-used today in Armenia, the former
Soviet Union, and among the `new diaspora’ formed after the migration
of the past 25 years-in 1940, which made it closer to
classical orthography (used today by the Diaspora, both speakers of
Western Armenian and of Eastern Armenian, in the case of Iran).

Manuk Abeghian passed away in 1944. The Institute of Literature of the
Armenian National of Academy carries his name.

Armenian Legionnaires

95th ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE OF ARARA

Today, September 19, is the 95th anniversary of the World War I Battle
of Arara, in which the Legion d’Orient (Armenian Legion) played a
major role. Four Armenian Legion brigades fought with the Allies in
Palestine to achieve a victory that led to the end of the war for the
Turkish army, which was defeated in October of 1918. The role of the
Armenian Legion was so
pivotal that its efforts were recognized by the top commanders of the
Allied Forces. General Edmund Allenby commended Armenian forces in his
official
dispatch to the Allied High Command: `On the right flank, on the
coastal hills, the units of the Armenian Legion d’Orient fought with
great valour. Despite the difficulty of the terrain and the strength
of the enemy defensive lines, at an early hour, they took the hill of
Dir el Kassis.’ Allenby also said, `I am proud to have had an Armenian
contingent under my command. They have fought very brilliantly and
have played a great part in the victory.’
