Diaspora-Armenian Philanthropist Passes Away

DIASPORA-ARMENIAN PHILANTHROPIST PASSES AWAY

August 07, 2013 | 10:38

Armenian philanthropist and national activist Garabed Kalfayan died
at the age of 84.

He was an eminent representative of the Greek-Armenian community and
a great Armenian patriot.

Kalfayan greatly assisted Armenia, especially ever since its early
years of independence in 1991, specifically during the years of the
Karabakh War.

He had organized the delivery of about five dozen planes of
humanitarian cargo to Armenia, for which he had received a special
award from Elizabeth Dole, then-President of the American Red Cross.

Owing to the efforts by the Kalfayan family, numerous initiatives
have become a reality, such as many Armenian cultural ensembles’
performances in Greece and in Cyprus.

During the first years of Armenia’s independence, Garabed Kalfayan
was also the Armenian MFA’s first representative for the Government
of Greece.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
