Palm Sunday

** Palm Sunday and Holy Week
————————————————————

On March 24, Armenian Churches worldwide will observe Palm Sunday, the
feast of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. On this day the
altar curtain, which remains closed in the Armenian Church during
Great Lent, will be re-opened with the special Turen-Patzek
(door-opening) service.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week-the sacred commemoration
of the dramatic events leading to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ,
his victory over death, and the redemption of humanity and the fallen
world. The Armenian Church re-enacts these episodes in the days
leading up to Easter.

Release of Doves ceremony will go forth on the cathedral plaza. This
year, Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian will serve as the godfather of
the doves ceremony. Some traditional children’s Easter activities will
also take place.

ACYOA Day

** ACYOA Day Across the Diocese
————————————————————

On Palm Sunday parishes throughout the Eastern Diocese will celebrate
ACYOA Day.

Members of the ACYOA Central Council will be featured speakers at
several of the celebrations: Karen Dardarian will give a presentation
at the Church of the Holy Martyrs in Bayside, NY; Olivia Derderian at
St. Gregory the Illuminator Church of White Plains, NY; Ani Grigorian
at St. James Church of Evanston, IL; and Armen Terjimanian at St. Mary
Church of Washington, DC.

Parishes have traditionally used this occasion to focus attention on
the ACYOA and celebrate its contributions to the church. Many ACYOA
chapters=80’both Juniors and Seniors-use the opportunity to promote
their programs or to honor individuals who have made an impact on
young people in the church.

On Saturday, March 23, members of the ACYOA Central Council will meet
with Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan Primate, to review upcoming
programs, including retreats planned in Chicago, IL, and Watertown,
MA, in April; a chapter workshop scheduled for June; and the Armenia
Service Program, scheduled for July 1-20. The council will also review
plans for the ACYOA General Assembly and Sports Weekend, which will be
hosted by Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Church of Providence, RI, at the end
of May.

Primate’s Message

** Primate’s Easter Message
————————————————————

In this year’s Easter message, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Diocesan
Primate, reflects on Christ’s final command, known as the Great
Commission, which marked a turning point in the activity of the early
Christians.

Previously, Jesus and his followers had never ventured more than a
hundred miles from the place of Christ’s birth. But now the disciples
were commanded to travel the world, spreading the Good News to all
nations. The `disciples’-followers and students of Jesus=80’would
become `apostles’: teachers, advocates, and living examples who would
bring Christ’s message-and Christ himself-to the rest of the world.

They forged the church as the vessel which would transmit the Gospel
message down through the ages. And through it, we too have been given
the opportunity to stand alongside those early followers of our
Lord. This is especially true of the profound drama we enter every
year during the church’s sacred observance of Holy Week. From Holy
Thursday through Easter Sunday, each service leads us, in heart and
mind, to stand among Jesus and his disciples.

** Ancient Art Provides Creative Outlet for Kids in Need
————————————————————

For 15 years now, children at the Gavar Orphanage in Armenia have been
learning the ancient Armenian art of carpet weaving, as part of a
special club that offers young people a creative outlet while teaching
them a valuable skill.

Last month, the carpet-weaving club was grateful to receive 33 pounds
of high-quality threads of wool and cotton from the New York-based
Megerian Rugs
()
company. The company made the generous donation after being contacted
by the Fund for Armenian Relief to help replenish the club’s stock of
colored threads.

The Gavar Orphanage, a state-run institution located in the center of
Armenia’s Gegharkunik region, houses some 100 children, ages
3-18. Many of its beneficiaries receive support through various
programs run by the Fund for Armenian Relief. Rugs made by children at
the orphanage are sold, with proceeds going directly to the children
and to the purchase of new materials. The orphanage also displays the
rugs at exhibitions and fairs.

Emil Lazarian

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
