SERZH SARGSYAN: ARMENIA WILL RECOGNIZE NKR, IF AZERBAIJAN RESUMES MILITARY ACTIONS

Armenia will not gain dividends from recognizing the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic, President of Armenia Serzh Sarhsyan told media on March
18 when commenting on the statement by Raffi Hovannisian, Leader of
Heritage Party, on the necessity of recognizing NKR.
The president said that at the moment this will negatively affect the
negotiation process for resolution of the Karabakh conflict, because
the process will be terminated and the possibility of resumption of
military actions will increase.
“It will be a slap in the face of both the negotiating party and the
OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, especially if various offensive statements
are addressed to them from the Liberty Square. What if the war is
resumed? We will remain alone against the entire world, won’t we?
Only irresponsible people can make such statements and calls. They
think that people like such statements, but they don’t think of such
nuances as security of thousands of people. So, with a single hasty
decision we can put an end to a process continuing for already 20
years. They simply do not understand what war is,” the president said.
He once again declared his position, which has been repeatedly
voiced on international platforms, i.e. Armenia will recognize NKR
if Azerbaijan resorts to resumption of military actions and creates
a situation when there will be no alternative solution.
“Then we will have nothing to lose. And we will declare that we are
a single country or NKR is an independent country and we guarantee
its security. However, we are not going to unleash war,” he said.
The president stressed that in all other cases thinking of recognizing
NKR means betraying the Armenian citizens, betraying the soldiers
guarding our boundary.
“We speak of emigration, of preservation of our language, of democracy
and at the same time unleash war endangering everything we have by
a hasty decision,” the president said.
