Dinçer becomes first education minister to visit Armenian school

21 December 2012 / TODAYSZAMAN.COM, İSTANBUL,

With his historic visit to Pangaltı Armenian School in İstanbul’s
Å?iÅ?li district on Wednesday, Education Minister Ã-mer Dinçer became the
first Turkish education minister to visit an Armenian school in
history.
Dinçer’s visit was paid to return a visit last year in which students
from the school came to Dinçer’s office to request that unfriendly
references to Armenians be removed from school textbooks.

In his speech at the school, Dinçer also said that the government will
do its best to provide religious education to its citizens from all
faiths.

Furthermore, Dinçer addressed a recent amendment to the university
entrance exam, in which religious questions were inserted, saying that
this move was misrepresented to the public. He said religious
questions have always been asked under a different category for years,
but this time it was separately categorized and that students from
minority religious groups will not be asked these questions, which are
based on Islam.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
