** Distinguished Honor for a Church Leader
————————————————————

In New York on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, His Holiness Karekin II,
the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, presented a
unique honor to Mrs. Louise Manoogian Simone, lifelong Armenian
philanthropist and past president of the AGBU, making her the first
recipient of the `Knight of Holy Etchmiadzin’ Pontifical Medal.

The medal had been conferred on Mrs. Manoogian Simone in February
2011, but during this month’s visit to the Eastern Diocese His
Holiness wanted to personally present it and to express his deep
appreciation to Mrs. Manoogian Simone for her numerous contributions
to Armenia’s national and ecclesiastical life.

Known throughout the world as a heroic supporter of Armenian causes,
Mrs. Manoogian Simone has followed in the distinguished tradition of
her late parents, Alex and Marie Manoogian, who were themselves
recognized by the Republic of Armenia as National Heroes of the
homeland in tribute to their countless benefactions for the Armenian
people, and visionary leadership of AGBU.

Louise Manoogian Simone’s long tenure as AGBU president straddled
Armenia’s Soviet period and its rebirth as an independent republic,
and her efforts at a critical time proved instrumental to the
development of the young republic and Nagorno-Karabagh. Her support
has been both organizational and personal, practical and visionary,
and has always been undertaken with a direct, `hands-on’ approach.

** New Church Consecrated in Vanadzor, Armenia
————————————————————

On Thursday, November 22, a new church was consecrated in Vanadzor,

Gougark. Government officials and local residents took part in the
service.

The small house of worship named `St. Vartan the Warrior Church’
stands on the site of a former sanctuary dating to the 7th

1988 earthquake.

The construction of St. Vartan Church is part of an ongoing revival of
ecclesiastical buildings in the Gougark Diocese. Since 1996, more than
30 churches have been built or renovated in cities and villages across
