Rihanna, Shakira urged to axe concerts

October 07, 2012

RIHANNA and Shakira have been urged by bosses at Amnesty International
to postpone upcoming shows in Azerbaijan.

The two pop singers have gigs scheduled in Baku, the capital of the
country, which straddles Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Leaders of
Amnesty have sent both Rihanna and Shakira letters, asking them to
delay their shows out of respect to the activists and journalists who
were recently arrested in the country, reports WENN.

The letter reads: `Both singers should be aware of the situation in
the country. Amnesty International believes that the Azerbaijani
government should afford all artists, journalists, activists and
ordinary citizens the right to express themselves freely without fear
of reprisal. We hope that you share our belief.’

Rihanna was scheduled to perform in the country on October 6 and
Shakira was set for two dates next week, have yet to publicly respond.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
