With respect to the bill criminalizing denial of genocides, the expert
in Turkic studies Hakob Chaqryan has no doubts about French President
Nicolas Sarkozy’s sincerity.
At his meeting with journalists on Friday, Chaqryan answered a question
as to why the French leader did not immediately sign the bill into law
thereby allowing it to be appealed to the Constitutional Council. “May
be, he was not in a hurry to attach high importance to the bill,
but I cannot doubt his sincerity,” the expert said.
Chaqryan warns against getting disappointed at the French
Constitutional Council’s ruling. It was France’s initiative rather
than Armenia’s. So it is a threat to France’s international reputation.
“We should show a cool attitude to such processes as they cannot
affect the international process of recognition of Armenian Genocide,”
Chaqryan said.
