Xconomist Noubar Afeyan, co-founder and CEO of Flagship Ventures in
Cambridge, MA, was one of those awarded the Ellis Island Medal of
Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition (NECO) over the weekend. Afeyan
received the award in recognition of “his achievements not only as a
successful technologist and entrepreneur, but also as a humanitarian
who has had a positive impact on his local community and in his ethnic
home country of Armenia,” according to a NECO press release.

Erik Mellgren is a Swedish journalist who worked for Xconomy Boston in
2008 as part of the Stanford Innovation Journalism Fellowship program.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
