There are more than 110 breakaway buildings in the Armenian province
of Shirak, of which 88 buildings with 1920 apartments are in Gyumri.

These are mainly buildings that were damaged as a result of the
earthquake in 1988.

Head of the Governor’s Office Urban Development Department Albert
Margaryan said during previous years works were carried out over these
buildings with the programs of the World Bank, state budget means,
“Lincy” Foundation but after 2004 no means were provided for the
restoration works.

“As far as this issue exists in the whole territory of Armenia, in
borderline zones a new concept is being worked out on the initiative
of the Urban Development Ministry on restoration of buildings. It
will be an all-state program and the issue of Shirak’s breakaway
buildings will also be solved,” Margaryan said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
