AZERBAIJANI COMMUNITY OF NAGORNO KARABAKH APPEALS TO ARMENIAN COMMUNITY

The chairman of the Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno Karabakh Bayram
Safarov called on the Azerbaijani citizens namely Armenians living in
Nagorno-Karabakh to respect his country’s constitution and to share
with the Azerbaijani people’s prosperous life.
Armenians living in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh can also benefit
from the developed economy and prosperous life of Azerbaijan, Mr.
Safarov told journalists.
“However, for this they should respect the Azerbaijani constitution
and in this case they can use the wealth of Azerbaijan as we do. If
not, they can go and live on the other side of the Hakari river,
in Armenia,” Mr. Safarov said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. are
currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
