CONSTRUCTION OF SEVERAL NEW HYDROPOWER PLANTS EXPECTED TO KICK OFF IN 2012 IN NAGORNO-KARABAKH

YEREVAN, October 5. / ARKA /. Nagorno-Karabakh prime minister Ara
Harutyunian said today the construction of several new hydropower
plants is expected to kick off in 2012.
Speaking at the third issuance of shares of Artsakh hydropower plant
(Artsakh HEK) he said 3-4 hydropower plants can be built on the river
of Tartar that connects the Sarsang and Mataghis water reservoirs,
with a total capacity of up to 50 Megawatt and a potential annual
output of electricity up to 200-220 million kWh.
The prime minister said the new hydropower plant will create new jobs
in Nagorno-Karabakh and enhance its energy security.
Artsakh HEK is building currently five small hydropower plants. The
construction of Trge-1 HPP is completed, Trge-2 will be commissioned
before the end of October, Mataghis-1, MatagÑ~@is-2 will be
commissioned in the first quarter of 2012, and the construction
of Trge-3 is scheduled to begin at the end of 2011. These small
hydroelectric power plants will generate more than 100 million kWh a
year, which together with 130 million KWh that the Sarsang hydropower
plant can produce will provide for annual output of 230 million kWh
The construction of Syunik-1 and Syunik-2 hydropower plants in Karabakh
is also nearing completion.. The amount of co-generated electricity
is expected to exceed 300 million kilowatt-hours This will exceed the
domestic demand for electricity in Nagorno-Karabakh, and in accordance
with an agreement the surplus will be sold to distribution networks
in Armenia.
