A delegation from the World Council of Churches (WCC) visited today
Yerevan’s Tsitsernakaberd memorial to pay tribute to the victims of
the Armenian Genocide.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, the Council’s President Olav
Tveit said he had prayed for the rest of the innocent martyrs on
behalf of the 350 churches represented in the organization.

WCC recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1983. Every year on April 24,
the churches affiliated with the Council commemorate the anniversary
of the 20th century’s biggest atrocity.

Tveit has been invited to Armenia by Supreme Patriarch Garegin II. On
September 21, he attended the celebrations dedicated to the 20th
anniversary of Armenia’s independence. He also visited the Gevorgyan
seminary in the town of Echmiadzin to deliver a lecture on theology
to the students

Tveit is also scheduled to visit the Matenadaran, the institute of
ancient Armenian manuscripts.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
