BORDER RELATIONS WITH REPUBLIC OF AZERBAIJAN SHOULD EXPAND- PRESIDENT

Ardebil, Sept 15, IRNA – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on
Thursday that Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to expand border
relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan.

“Nobody can disturb relations between Baku and Tehran, said the
President while addressing a gathering of people in the city of Pars
Abad Moghan in the northwestern province of Ardebil.

He said, ‘Azerbaijanis are our brothers and we want to expand relations
with our brothers in all fields .’

The Iranian President is visiting cities in Ardebil province on the
fourth round of his provincial tours that started in 2005 when he
took office as president of the country.

Pars Abad Moghan is a border region with some customs offices between
Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Iran has an embassy in Baku and a consulate-general in the automonous
republic of Nakhichevan. Azerbaijan has an embassy in Tehran and a
consulate-general in Tabriz.

Iran and Azerbaijan have had diplomatic relations since the latter’s
independence from the former Soviet Union. Iran supports Azerbaijan
over Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. The two countries have a majority Shia
population and share many cultural commonalties.
