The South Bay Guitar Society launches its season on a vibrant,
passionate note with a concert by Armenian virtuoso guitarist Gohar
Vardanyan. The society, starting its 26th season, presents Vardanyan
in performance Sept. 17, 8 p.m. at West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale
Ave., Saratoga

Vardanyan is a Juilliard alumna who also studied at the Interlochen
Center for the Arts and the Peabody Conservatory, and her diverse
credits include performances at the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington, D.C., Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and guitar
societies on both West and East coasts. She has also taught both
privately and through a fellowship for interactive performance,
for New York City public schools.

Vardanyan’s program for the guitar society spans about four centuries
of classical compositions, from Scarlatti’s Sonatas in A major and
F minor to Milonga by living composer Jorge Cardoso. Her program
features a strong Latin emphasis, with selections by Spain’s Albeniz
and Turina, and by Argentinean tango master Piazzolla, to name a few.

As always, the guitar society is making sure that a broad Bay
Area audience not only gets several chances to hear a visiting
musician perform, but also has a chance to get know something about
her art form. Vardanyan will be featured in a live performance
and interview Sept. 16, 5 p.m. on KKUP 91.5 FM, and she will also
present a pre-concert lecture and demonstration Sept. 17, 1 p.m. at
the Sunnyvale Public Library, 665 W. Olive Ave., Sunnyvale.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
