VAHAN SHIRKHANYAN: BEST VARIANT IN NK ISSUE IS STATUS-QUO MAINTENANCE

“Territories instead of status” resolution bust be replaced with
the condition of “equivalent exchange of territories”, member of
Social-Democratic Hunchakian Party’s central department, former
Deputy Defense Minister Vahan Shirkhanyan said today at a meeting
with journalists.
According to him, Azerbaijan tries to prove the whole world that
Armenia has occupied the 20% of its territories. “The final solution
of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict will stop Turkey’s ambitions in
Caucasus and Central Asia, which will promote development of Armenia,”
Mr. Shirchanyan noted.
In response to journalists’ consideration that this method of solution
proposed by the speaker – exchange of territories, is impossible, Mr.
Shirkhanyan said that 20 years ago liberation of Nagorno Karabakh
seemed to be impossible, and 25 years ago – collapse of the Soviet
Union. “This is a desirable way of solution, the world has precedents
of it,” the speaker assured.
“I have always said and repeat today that status-quo change in Karabakh
issue is profitable neither for Armenia, nor for Azerbaijan and Russia,
the best variant is status-quo maintenance, until a solution is find
which will bring peace to the region,” Mr.
Shirchanyan stressed.
