The stars of rock received `Medals of honor’

`When the earthquake happened the people of west were too much
concerned with it. In England we wanted to help a country but we
didn’t know how to as it was a part of the Soviet Union’, – said Jon
Dee the Founder and Chairman of the Australian `Do Something’ NGO and
the author of Rock Aid Armenia project.

Rock Aid Armenia project was launched 20 years ago upon the initiative
of John Din in 1989, who visited Spitak and Leninakan (Gyumri) for
shooting films. Returning to London, John Din decided to unite
rock-stars and release a special disc collection.

The funds obtained from the sale of Rock Aid Armenia disc were spent
to eliminate consequences of 1988 Spitak earthquake.
In summer 1989 at the historic Metropolis Studios in Chiswick, London
the group Deep Purple gave the record of the `Smoke on the
Water’. Prominent music groups such as «Queen», «Pink
Ployd», «The Who», «Deep Purple», «Black
Sabbath», «Iron Maiden» partook in the recording
process. Besides the joint record each of the stars presented one song
and in 1990 was released a CD. The money gathered in the result of
sale of the CD was dedicated to those affected by the Leninakan
Earthquake of 1988 that struck Armenia.

On this occasion the `Mediamaks’ agency implements `Armenia Grateful
to Rock’ which is aimed at expressing its gratitude to all the
participants of the project `Rock Aid Armenia’. The project was
implemented also by the support of the RA President staff, as well as
the support of the `HayRusGazard’ company and `BMI’ Air Company.

In the frameworks of the `Armenia Grateful to Rock’ project the RA
President Serzh Sargsyan signed decrees in June on giving `Medal of
Honor’ to Ian Gillan a member of `Deep Purple’, Tony Ayommy `Black
Sabbath’, Jeff Downs `Asia’, winner of 1987 Wimbledon tournament Pat
Cash and the Founder and Chairman of the Australian advocacy
organization `Do Something!’ Jon Dee.
er received the `Medal of Honor’ by the PM Tigran Sargsyan.

The highest prize of the president got Brayan May `Queen’ and David

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
