New York’s St. Vartan Cathedral Celebrates THE Consecration of New Bronze
Entry Doors

Speaking at the consecration of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral’s new bronze
entry doors last Sunday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg described the
grand portal as "a remarkable piece of work" that reflects the "passion and
craftsmanship" of the Armenian-American community.

"Today is the beginning of yet another wonderful chapter in St. Vartan’s
history," the mayor said, addressing the more than 800 people gathered in
the sanctuary on May 31.

"This is a religious site of great importance to you and to Armenians across
the entire country – a magnificent house of prayer that New York is proud to
be home to."

The day marked the first time the mayor had visited the cathedral during his
two terms in office.

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church
of America (Eastern), celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Sunday and
consecrated the new doors on the cathedral plaza.

He welcomed Mayor Bloomberg "as a good friend and as a member of our
family."

The Primate said that the cathedral had a long history of hosting city
leaders, from Mayor John Lindsay, who visited the cathedral after its
consecration in 1968, to Mayors Edward Koch and David Dinkins, and more
recently, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

"The doors have been years in the making and you can sense the passion and
the craftsmanship that went into them as soon as you see them," Mayor
Bloomberg said.

Remarking that the cathedral was built by survivors of the Armenian
Genocide, Mayor Bloomberg added that "it serves as a powerful reminder to
all peoples of the ability to create and beautify from the ashes of grief."

* Many Stories in One Image

Following services, Archbishop Barsamian and Mayor Bloomberg led a
procession to the cathedral plaza where the new doors were unveiled by the
mayor and Primate.

The consecration ceremony began after Mayor Bloomberg’s departure,
culminating in Archbishop Khajag Barsamian tracing crosses on the doors in
holy chrism.

The afternoon was a time to celebrate the beauty of St. Vartan Cathedral and
the preservation of the ancient Armenian spirit in the United States.

Gathering under a nearly cloudless sky, visitors watched as the Shushi
Armenian Dance Ensemble of St. Vartan Cathedral, donning traditional
Armenian costumes, moved across the cathedral plaza, hands and feet weaving
the story of a nation’s journey. The ensemble is directed by Seta
Paskalian-Kantardjian.

The day continued with a multimedia photo exhibition in Guild Hall, which
chronicled the fabrication of the cathedral doors.

More than 30 years in the planning, the doors were first conceived by
members of the St. Vartan Cathedral Guild who dreamed of erecting a grand
entranceway to what was at the time a still-new "mother cathedral."

Led by guild chair Mrs. Alice Kavookjian, the group set about raising money
for the project, organizing dinners, bake sales, and other activities. A
sizeable amount was collected in those years, but work on the project was
put on hold as the Diocese turned its attention to other matters.

Some seven years ago, under the leadership of the Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian,
dean of St. Vartan Cathedral, a committee was formed to resume the doors
undertaking. The Rev. Fr. Garabed Kochakian, Yn. Yefkin Megherian, and
Michael Haratunian served on the committee, helping design the doors and
oversee their production.

This year, the Dadourian family gave a sizeable contribution that allowed
the project to go forward.

The doors were fabricated by Setrak Agonian and a team of sculptors and
artists at International Creative Medal Inc.

The doors depict in three-dimensional sculpted relief the conversion of
Armenia to Christianity. The two panels focus on the baptism of King Drtad
by St. Gregory the Illuminator in A.D. 301. The sculpted artwork also shows
Queen Ashkhen, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, and Mount Ararat.

The transom above the portal bears the image of Christ with an inscription
that honors the date of the cathedral’s consecration – April 28, 1968 – by
His Holiness Vasken I.

Fr. Kochakian said the work represented "a collection of many stories into
one image."

"It brings together and synthesizes the conversion of a nation and the
witness of our people, over 1,700 years of remaining faithful to the call of
Christ and pledging ourselves to do so in the future," he said.

In his sermon on Sunday, Archbishop Barsamian said that the doors speak to
the ancient Armenian Christian tradition and to the way in which the
Armenian people embraced Christ’s message.

"Let these new doors, and the image upon them, always remind us of this
truth: That whenever we approach the great doorways – the great turning
points – of our lives, we do so armed only with our faith," the Primate
said.

* "Each Generation Has Something to Contribute"

During the program on Sunday, the Diocese recognized three surviving St.
Vartan Guild members – Bertha Khavlijian Moriarty, Araxe Cherishian, and Yn.
Mariam Ashjian – and Linda Kirishjian, who attended the event on behalf of
her late mother, Araksi Kirishjian.

"Alice Kavookjian’s dream was to have the great portals," said Mrs.
Moriarty, recalling how guild members, including her mother, fundraised
through the years. She said they would have been proud with the finished
project.

"The great portals proclaim our Christianity and our history in such a
magnificent way," she added.

The Diocese also expressed its appreciation to the Dadourian family.

Alex Dadourian spoke about his father, Dadour Dadourian, one of the original
visionaries who conceived St. Vartan Cathedral. Alex Dadourian recalled that
his father "had two loves in his life: his family and his church."

Having come to the U.S. as an orphan at a young age, Dadour Dadourian never
forgot his Armenian roots. He worked tirelessly to raise money for the
cathedral and was happy to see his sons, Alex and the late Haig Dadourian,
carrying on his legacy.

Also recognized were the Gulbenkian and Diarbekirian families and the
Knights and Daughters of Vartan for their contributions to the establishment
of the Diocesan Center.

Ed Gulbenkian said he was inspired and encouraged by an older generation of
men who had been dedicated servants of the Armenian Church.

He added, "I challenge all of you to become leaders in the Armenian Church."

Archbishop Barsamian closed the day by recalling that "forty years ago
Catholicos Vasken consecrated this cathedral. But that was not the end of
its story-only the beginning. Today reminds us that each generation has
something to contribute to our cathedral. Indeed, the work our Lord calls
us to do is never-ending."

A commemoration committee co-chaired by Melanie Dadourian and Greg Dadourian
organized Sunday’s program. Other committee members include Karen
Kouzoujian, Alice Demirjian, Astrid Dadourian, Haig Ariyan, and Dn. Sebuh
Oscherichian.

Haig Ariyan also served as the master of ceremonies. A piano performance was
given by Ari Nareg Terjanian.

The photo exhibition in Guild Hall was designed by Alice Demirjian, with
assistance from Melissa Dadourian and Heather Dadourian.

PRESS RELEASE

ATP’s Community Tree Planting Program Continues Greening Armenia

— 28,422 Trees and Shrubs Already Planted for Spring Season

YEREVAN–Armenia Tree Project (ATP) has once again successfully accomplished
its greening mission through its flagship Community Tree Planting Program.
This spring season, tree plantings, site maintenance, and monitoring were
conducted at 94 sites in 12 regions including Artsakh. Already this year,
28,422 fruit and decorative trees have been planted from seedlings grown in
ATP’s Karin and Khachpar nurseries.

"This year, we decided to make it a priority to allocate trees to those
communities which demonstrated exceptional motivation and a caring attitude
towards these environmental restoration projects," stated ATP Executive
Director Jeff Masarjian. "In these places where people were taking extra
care in their orchards, we measured very high survival rates. In many
communities the survival rate of trees was observed to be 98-99 percent."

"In the communities that partner with ATP, people recognize and understand
the importance of our trees. The population appreciates the work that ATP
does and the mission that our project has been carrying out since 1994,"
added Community Tree Planting Program Manager Anahit Gharibyan. "In
addition, local authorities express their appreciation and take
responsibility when it comes to developing and beautifying their community
territories, as they know that trees will provide a range of economic and
environmental benefits."

ATP participated in a number of ceremonial plantings this spring, including
a tree planting with the Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan at the
Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial on April 23, and a planting in the park
behind the new Paramaz Avedisian Building on the campus of American
University of Armenia.

The planting at AUA was accomplished with the assistance of staff and
students including representatives from the Acopian Center for the
Environment. Twenty five ninth grade students and two teachers from School
No. 10 also participated in the planting. The school is supported by Ed
Avedisian, who is also a benefactor of AUA and ATP. A total of 497
decorative trees and shrubs were planted on the AUA site in April.

"We have come together for one of the most important actions as part of the
Paramaz Avedisian Building project and that is the tree planting and setting
of the park territory behind the building. This area was used for over four
years as a construction site and now the time has come to decorate and give
it a face. This endeavor is essential and it would not be possible without
the coordination and valuable assistance from Armenia Tree Project,"
emphasized Construction Manager Faraj Yeretsian.

"We were pleased that the tree planting at AUA united schoolchildren,
teachers, university students, and staff. It is noteworthy that the event
was undertaken on April 22, which is internationally recognized as Earth
Day," added Gharibyan. "This planting involved the participation of our
Community Tree Planting and Environmental Education programs, since our
education director Manya Gevorgyan worked closely with the teachers and
schoolchildren in advance of the day’s planting."

Many of the AUA volunteers who had never planted a tree before were trained
by ATP staff in proper planting techniques. University staff and other
volunteers participating in the event were enthusiastic and declared that
they were looking forward to coming back to the site next year to observe
how well their planted trees had grown, and to enjoy the view of the new
green landscape.

Similar tree plantings were organized by ATP at other institutions, schools,
churches, and orphanages in Yerevan and Armenia’s regions this spring.
Several sites that were beautified by ATP this spring include the Institute
of Molecular Biology, Mkhitar Sebastasti Education Complex, Nansen Park in
Yerevan, Nor Nork Boarding School, and St. Sarkis Church in Yerevan.

"ATP is proud of its Community Tree Planting Program, since it provides high
quality fruit and decorative trees to rural and urban communities every
season. We are also working on a large-scale initiative to plant more than
one million reforestation seedlings in the Lori region this year," noted
Masarjian. "We will announce our progress in the fall, and we are actively
seeking the support of our donors to help ensure the success of this program
in our 15th anniversary year."

Since 1994, Armenia Tree Project has planted and restored more than
3,000,000 trees and created hundreds of jobs for impoverished Armenians in
tree-regeneration programs. The organization’s three tiered initiatives are
tree planting, community development to reduce poverty and promote
self-sufficiency, and environmental education to protect Armenia’s precious
natural resources. For additional information and to support ATP, visit the

AGBU Receives Exceptional Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator
Watchdog Group

The world’s largest Armenian non-profit organization, the Armenian
General Benevolent Union (AGBU), received a four-star rating — the
highest allotted — for sound fiscal management from charity watchdog
Charity Navigator (). AGBU, whose overall score
was based on its short-term spending practices and long-term
sustainability, ranked above a number of leading non-profits, including
the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Amnesty International
and the Smithsonian Institution. Charity Navigator explains that its
four-star rating denotes that the organization "exceeds industry
standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause."

In a letter of acknowledgment for AGBU’s achievement, Ken Berger,
President & Chief Executive Officer of Charity Navigator, wrote, "We are
proud to announce Armenian General Benevolent Union has earned our
4-star rating for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its
finances…This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator
differentiates Armenian General Benevolent Union from its peers and
demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust."

Founded in 2001, Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest and
most-utilized evaluator of over 5,000 of America’s best-known charities.
Their rating system examines two broad areas of a charity’s financial
health — how responsibly it functions day to day, and how well
positioned it is to sustain its programs over time. Each charity is then
awarded an overall rating, ranging from zero to four stars. The
organization does not charge charities that are evaluated and provides
its service free of charge to the public.

Established in 1906, AGBU (agbu.org) is the world’s largest non-profit
Armenian organization. Headquartered in New York City, AGBU preserves
and promotes the Armenian identity and heritage through educational,
cultural and humanitarian programs, annually touching the lives of some
400,000 Armenians on five continents.

going to discuss the result of the Yerevan Mayor election. The Regnum
informs, referring to reliable sources. There is information that
the initiator of this meeting is the U.S. embassy.

Europeans Are To Speak In Autumn

EUROPEANS ARE TO SPEAK IN AUTUMN

Lragir.Am
14:37:42 – 01/06/2009

The mission of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the
Council of Europe to observe the municipal elections in Yerevan,
which observed the Yerevan Mayor election with the help of about
fifteen observers, presented its preliminary conclusions, stating
that the election was held positively.

"The Congress delegation welcomes and expresses its satisfaction in
connection with the Yerevan Mayor elections and in connection with
the fact that Armenia promoted the establishment of democracy with
the help of its own means. The Congress delegation registered some
progress in this connection in comparison with the previous Local
Authorities election in September 2008.

The democracy cannot be limited only to the electoral process. There
must be some culture concerning the election and its process. The
elections have to be simple, clear and transparent, even out of
the polling stations," stated the head of the CoE delegation Nigel
Mernegon.

He stated that the observers visited more than 230 polling stations
and spent there from 5 minutes to 2 hours time. "I do not think we
were able to do more within our possibilities. When we learnt of
different incidents and went to those polling stations we registered
some problems, which we will voice, we will also speak about those
posts where everything was going well".

According to him, the final report will be presented by October and
it will be presented to the PACE Autumn session. "We have to make a
thorough report where we will present the details", the head of the
CoE delegation. At the same time, he noted that he does not want to
say that everything corresponded to the European measurements.

"Of course, I have my own conclusions, but there are members of
our delegation, who did not express their thoughts, and we did not
manage to see everything what happened yesterday", stated Nigel
Mernegton. According to him, the mistakes, which he preferred not to
mention until the final report, may have influenced on the result of
the election, but not on its legality.

There has been no election in Armenia before, during which so many
cases of violence against reporters were registered as on May 31, at
the Yerevan Mayor election. Does this suit the European measurements
too? This question was addressed to the head of the mission of the
Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe
to observe the municipal elections in Yerevan, which assessed the
election as positive and corresponding the European measurements.

"It is outside our competence. But we have reached such information
since the beginning of the month and we will take it into account in
our final report", said Nigel Mermagen.

The office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia issued a statement,
which runs that on May 31, in connection with the Yerevan Mayor
election, the Yerevan office of the Human Rights Defender got more
than a decade of complaints concerning the following problems.

– People are taken to the polling stations by mini-buses and are
instructed to vote for this or some other candidate.

– People are taken to Yerevan from Gyumri, Vanadzor and other cities
to vote in the election – The principle of secrecy of the election
has been broken at a number of polling stations – Work of journalists
is impeded, as well as cases of violence against the reporters are
registered

The Armenian Human Rights Defender is ready to examine the electoral
breaches in the framework of his power. The Human Rights Defender
condemns the violence against reporters and calls on the relevant
bodies to take up necessary measures to punish those responsible.

First Results Of TV Monitoring

FIRST RESULTS OF TV MONITORING

Lragir.Am
12:30:47 – 01/06/2009

The Yerevan Press Club, which monitored the TV broadcasting of the
7 TV channels of Armenia with the assistance of the Open Society
Institute, on June 1 presented the results of its monitoring. H 1,
H 2, Shant, Armnews, Yerkir Media, ALM and Kentron TV channels
underwent monitoring.

The Head of the Press Club of Yerevan, Boris Navasardyan, noted that
unlike the presidential election, the material and the technologies,
which was taken up by the participants, was not to prove that their
competitors are bad, but they were trying to prove that they are
good. As Navasardyan stated, this was a positive and a kind electoral
campaign.

Boris Navasardyan stated that our TV channels, when they want,
they are able to be very neutral, they want it or they are let be
neutral. According to the results of the TV monitoring, the H 1 made
the main balanced broadcasting of the electoral campaign. From the
point of view of the time allocated to all the parties/alliances,
H 1 was followed by the H 2, then Armnews, Shant, Kentron, Yerkir
Media and ALM. Form the point of view of the balance of the time
allocated to the parties/alliances, H 1 was followed by Shant, H 2,
Armnews, ALM, Kentron and Yerkir Media.

The Head of the Yerevan Media Club stated that there is a great
difference of the broadcasting the activities of the participants
and the electoral campaign, which is not a positive thing. And,
from this point of view, the parties have been separated in 4 groups.

According to him, the People’s Party, the head of which is Tigran
Karapetyan, has been much broadcasted and forms the first group. The
fact that the People’s Party leads is determined by the ALM TV channel,
which belongs to Tigran Karapetyan. The coalition parties Republican,
BHK, OYP and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun form the second group; in addition,
the ARF Dashnaktsutyun was in the centre of the attention thanks to
the Yerkir Media TV. The HAK is in the third group, which has been
less broadcasted that the members of the other groups, because it did
not have any TV channels which would have a special liking towards
the party. In case, as Boris Navasardyan stated, Shant, Armnews, H
2 had a special liking towards the Republican Party and the Kentron
TV channels likes the BHK very much, and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun was
the favorite of the Yerkir Media TV.

Boris Navasardyan stated that within the next days, they are going
to sum up the final results of the TV monitoring and they are going
to present them to the public.
