US Urges Progress In Turkey-Armenia Reconciliation Process

US URGES PROGRESS IN TURKEY-ARMENIA RECONCILIATION PROCESS

YEREVAN, Armenia — US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon
urged Armenia and Turkey on Tuesday (June 9th) to make progress in
ongoing talks aimed at normalising relations and re-opening their
border. Reconciliation negotiations should be concluded within
"a reasonable time frame," he told reporters during a visit to
Yerevan. Ankara and Yerevan have had no diplomatic relations
since Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993, to protest
Armenia’s occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In April, both
countries agreed on a road map to normalise ties and reopen the
border.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
