YEREVAN HOPES FOR EFFICIENT MEETING BETWEEN ARMENIAN AND AZERBAIJANI PRESIDENTS

Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan hopes the coming meeting
between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and his Azerbaijani
counterpart Ilkham Aliev in Prague will produce results.
He said that some progress is seen in Karabakh process, since the
Azerbaijani president has already admits the necessity to settle the
matter by grounding on principles of the international law.
The two presidents have already met three times in St. Petersburg,
Moscow and Zurich.
Nalbandyan hopes that the presidents’ meeting will bring the
conflicting sides’ stances closer to each other.
He remembered that Azerbaijan once rejected any negotiation based on
Madrid proposals and tried to impose anti-Armenian resolution to the
UN General Assembly.
But the resolution was voted down by the General Assembly. Not a
single EU member country voted in favor of it. Only 39 of 192 UN
member countries supported the Turkey-proposed resolution.
"Long months Azerbaijan tried to impose the resolution as base for
the talks, pointed out only one principle – territorial integrity –
and issued bellicose statements", Nalbandyan said.
He remembered that Baku had taken certain destructive steps in United
Nations also in 2009, but co-chair countries had condemned them.
The minister said that international organizations=2 0issued many
favorable-to-Armenia statements recently.
As an example, he singled out Moscow Declaration signed by Armenian,
Azerbaijani and Russian presidents, though a few days later Azerbaijan
called into question some clauses of the declaration.
Nalbandyan also pointed out three other documents signed in Helsinki
in December 2008.
The first of them was signed by foreign ministers of 56 OSCE countries,
the second by foreign ministers of OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries
and third was EU statement.
