September 2-15 an exhibition on "The history of Armenian sport in
the Ottoman Empire" will be opened at the Armenian Genocide Museum
of RA National Academy of Sciences. It will include some 70 photos,
documents, periodicals presenting the history of about 100 Armenian
sport clubs and football teams.

Armenian sports clubs and sportsmen have had a considerable
contribution to the development of sports in the Ottoman Empire.

The Armenian sports clubs organized Armenian Olympic Games in
Constantinople between 1911 and 1914.

In 1912 two Armenian athletes – Vahram Papazyana and Mkrtich Mkryan
participated in the 5th Summer Olympics in Stockholm, for the first
time representing the Empire at the Olympic Games.

Vahan Cheraz was the first to teach football and organize football
matches in Turkey.

A number of Armenian sportsmen fell victims of the genocide between
1915 and 1920 and the Armenian sport clubs suspended their activity.

Tensions In Russia-NATO Relations To Affect Armenia

TENSIONS IN RUSSIA-NATO RELATIONS TO AFFECT ARMENIA

PanARMENIAN.Net
01.09.2008 12:58 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Tensions in Russia-NATO relations will inevitably
affect Armenia, specifically the IPAP implementation, Executive
Director of the Armenian Atlantic Association Tevan Poghosyan told
a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. "Realization of reforms provided by the
IPAP will be decelerated," he said.

Russia has always been jealous about the NATO-Armenia cooperation,
according to him.

"At the same time, NATO’s presence in the Black Sea is not a
novelty. Turkey is a mature NATO member state. Bulgaria and Romania
also joined the Alliance, whose presence will not provoke incidents. I
don’t think NATO wants a confrontation. It will act as mechanism of
restraint and stabilization," Poghosyan said.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ It’s hard to say how Armenia should behave under the
circumstances, Executive Director of the Armenian Atlantic Association
Tevan Poghosyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

"Armenia has to consider all its moves to avoid new confrontation
with neighbors. It should remain a staunch ally and become a path to
reconciliation through establishing cooperation," he said.

"The national security concept and strategy developed and adopted
within the IPAP a year ago needs to be checked and improved," he added.

Armenia-Turkey Relations Shouldn’t Depend On Third Country’s Interes

ARMENIA-TURKEY RELATIONS SHOULDN’T DEPEND ON THIRD COUNTRY’S INTERESTS

PanARMENIAN.Net
01.09.2008 14:39 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Presidents and people of both Armenia and Turkey
should take the opportunity provided by the FIFA draws to overcome
the deadlock in bilateral relations, Armenian MP Armen Ashotyan told
a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

"Bilateral relations should never depend on a third country’s
interests. Our position is unchangeable: we stand for dialog without
preconditions. Establishment of relations will have a positive impact
of social and economic life in both countries. Given the increasing
tensions in the region, the Armenian-Turkish relations should transform
from latent confrontation to dynamic development," he said.

In a sign of readiness to normalize ties, Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan invited his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul to a World Cup
qualifying match between Armenian and Turkish teams due on September
6. The invitation is likely to be accepted.

Turkey cut its diplomatic ties and closed its border with Armenia
over the Nagorno Karabakh conflict in 1993.
