"THOSE BENEFITING FROM THE COOPERATION BETWEEN THE CATHOLICOSATE OF CILICIA
AND THE CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN FOUNDATION ARE THE ARMENIAN SCHOOL AND ARMENIAN
CULTURE"

SAYS HIS HOLINESS ARAM I

"The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation played a key role in the last 50 years
in the history of our nation through its educational and cultural
activities. So many schools, students (including the current Catholicos of
the Holy See of Cilicia), cultural structures, cultural and educational
events were funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation both in Armenia and
the Diaspora. The work of the Foundation is worthy of great praise," said
His Holiness Aram I during a reception in honor of Martin Yesayan held
yesterday evening in the Catholicosate.

Close cooperation exists between the Catholicosate of Cilicia and the
Gulbenkian Foundation. This cooperation has resulted in a number of
important achievements with respect to the strengthening of the Armenian
school and the advancement of Armenian cultural values. The Armenian school
and Armenian culture are sacred values for us. Therefore, we will continue
that cooperation with renewed commitment," His Holiness said.

His Holiness also commended the long-standing director of the Foundation’s
Armenian Department, Dr. Zaven Yegavian, who "through his good knowledge of
the Armenian reality and his commitment to education and culture played an
important role in enhancing the quality of the Foundation’s services."

Present at the reception were Mr. and Mrs. Martin and Tracy Yesayan, Dr.
Zaven Yegavian, Armenian ministers, deputies, members of the Central
National Committee and representatives from the Lebanese Armenian community’s
educational and cultural circles.

Martin Yesayan is the great grandchild of Calouste Gulbenkian. Succeeding
his father, Micheal Yesayan, he has been a member of the Gulbenkian
Foundation’s Central Committee and the general manager of its UK branch as
well as the Foundation’s Armenian Department. Visiting Lebanon as His
Holiness Aram I’s guests, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Yesayan paid visits to various
community institutions during their three-day stay in the country.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
