Statement by Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion on Armenia
Independence Day

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, I would like to extend my
best wishes to the Armenian community in Canada and around the world
as you celebrate Armenia Independence Day.

On September 21, 1991, Armenia asserted its full independence, opening
a new chapter in the rich history of this dynamic corner of the
world. Today we celebrate this important event and the vibrant culture
that Armenians have brought to the world.

Here in Canada we recognize this vibrancy in the photographs of Yousuf
Karsh, the films of Atom Egoyan, and in the delightful children’s
songs written and sung by Raffi. Canadians of Armenian origin have
played a vital role in the evolution of our country and are an
important part of Canada’s future.

Good relations between Canada and Armenia are also an important part
of Canada’s future. Our two countries share many values and
aspirations and this occasion provides us with an excellent
opportunity to celebrate our friendship.

On behalf of my Liberal colleagues, Happy Independence Day!

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
