Turkish President Abdullah Gul said yesterday that his landmark trip
to Armenia had been productive and gave him hope for the future of the
two neighbours with a long history of animosity. "I believe that my
visit was fruitful and that it promises hope for the future," Mr. Gul
said upon arrival from Yerevan, where he met his Armenian counterpart,
Serzh Sarkisian. Mr. Gul said he had a "constructive and sincere"
meeting with Mr. Sarkisian during which he won Yerevan’s support for a
new regional grouping in the Caucasus proposed by Ankara after the
outbreak of last month’s conflict between Georgia and Russia.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
