Since proclamation of Armenia’s independence Ankara has come up with
a number of initiatives to normalize its relations with Yerevan,
which, however, received no response. According to Turkish media,
Turkish President Abdullah Gul stated this during his meeting with
Turkish Ambassadors accredited in different countries.

"These initiatives and, in particular, the latest proposal to create
a joint commission of historians are waiting for an answer," the
Turkish President emphasized.

Turkish media, in their turn, commented upon Abdullah Gul’s this
statement as a signal of not being present at the Armenia-Turkey
football match to be held on September 6 in Yerevan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
