THOMAS HAMMARBERG TO VISIT ARMENIA TO ASSESS PROGRESS IN INQUIRY OF POST-ELECTORAL DEVELOPMENTS

Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg will
pay a three-day visit to Yerevan to assess the progress of the inquiry
of the post-electoral developments.

told Armenpress that during the visit Hammarberg will meet with the
Armenian President Serzh Sargsian, members of parliament, governmental
officials, chief prosecutor and members of the parliamentary ad hoc
commission set up to investigate March 1 events.

He will also meet with the arrested people and their lawyers, human
rights defender, as well as representatives of international and
non-governmental organizations. Together with two members of his office
and international expert Yohan Hirschfeldadt he will visit jails.

"This visit is a part of dialogue with the Armenian authorities,"
the commissioner said. "In my last report on Armenia I called on
conducting a comprehensive inquiry on March 1 events. The aim of this
visit is to assess the progress and get a clear information over the
number of the arrested people and their legal status," Hammarberg said.
