U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and
Labor, David J. Kramer said at a press conference in Yerevan Wednesday
that they have always welcomed protest actions if they are peaceful.

He outlined yesterday’s protest action in front of the US Embassy in
Armenia for setting free the editor of ‘Zhamanak Yerevan’ newspaper
Arman Babajanyan. David Kramer said they were not against the action
though the protesters made rather big noise. However, when he met
them and took their letter, the noise was stopped, D. Kramer said.

To recall, A. Babajanyan was detained on 26 June 2006 and charged
with point 2, part 2, Article 327 of Armenian Criminal Code (For
evading army service, exercises and gatherings). Later A. Babajanyan
was sentenced to 3.5 years of imprisonment. Babajanyan’s supporters
believe this a political persecution.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
