27.05.2008 17:08

Yerevan (Yerkir) – Delegates from more than 30 countries participated
in the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, held on May 21-26 in Armenia.
The delegates discussed the party’s activities for the past four years,
and adopted resolutions for the four years to come. ARF Bureau
representative Hrant Margarian spoke at a news conference held at the
Christapor Mikayelian center on May 27.

He said the congress discussed thoroughly all the strategic Armenian
issues. The congress elected the ARF Bureau, comprising 11 members:
Hrant Margarian, Vahan Hovhannisian, Aghvan Vardanian, Davit Lokian,
Levon Mkrtchian, Vigen Baghumian, Mkrtich Mkrtchian, Hakob
Ter-Khachatrian, Vigen Hovsepian, Hayk Ohsakan, Mario Nalbandian.

"By electing the cabinet ministers to the Bureau, the congress
surprised us," Margarian said, adding that the ministers will soon
resign, and new ministers will be appointed. He said this was the
ministers’ decision. "Being a Bureau member is a higher position than
that of a minister’s, and they decided to resign to be able to fulfill
their tasks in the Bureau," Margarian said.

Speaking about the media reports about the congress, Margarian said:
"The ANM press published many reports that I don’t want to speak about.
We said the truth without disrespect to anybody. We will not get so low
to respond them."

Margarian said that the congress wrapped up by pointing to the need of
a stronger organization, fair Armenia and national unity.

Margarian then read out the statement by the congress and answered the
questions by journalists.

American congressman Adam Schiff worries about development of situation
in the post-election Armenia

2008-05-27 17:01:00

ArmInfo. American congressman Adam Schiff said in an interview with
Radio Liberty that he worries about development of situation in the
post-election Armenia. , – Schiff said.

Asked if he thinks there are political prisoners in Armenia, American
congressman replied that the Department of State worries about the fact
that there are prisoners in the country which had been detained because
of making speeches during the political campaign in the republic as
well as because of expressing their own viewpoints. This is not a
ground to arrest them. People cannot be arrested for expression of
their views, Schiff said.

Asked if the USA may impose pressure upon the Armenian authorities
trying to stop fulfillment of "Millennium Challenges" programme, the
congressman replied: ‘I think it will be a big tragedy if the programme
is stopped, since it is a very important programme. It will be shameful
if fulfillment of the programme may fail because of the problem of
democratizing of the republic’, – he said and added there has never
been such a precedent in the history of the programme fulfillment.

`Lexicology and loanwords’ is a new book published by Syrian-Armenian writer Avo Katerjian

Azad-Hye Special

With its 1000 words and full Armenian equivalents, this is a unique
book, useful for teachers, students, researchers, translators and
others. It is an excellent resource to find out the meaning of foreign
words, nowadays in common use in everyday spoken and written Armenian.

In the introduction, Avo Katerjian explains about the two major parts
of the book: "Armenian lexicology" and "loanwords", referring to cases
of borrowing and adopting words from many sources (languages) and the
way they are used recently in the Armenian language.

Also he points out that the book could have been larger, but it is
only a collection of selected foreign words, that have been taken from
other languages and included in the Armenian language, both in Armenia
or in Diaspora. Such words are: alarm, allergy, embargo, ashugh,
dualism, energy, institute, humor, logo, global, icon, error message,
manifest, marathon, radical, screen, paragraph, capitalism, concrete,
formula, etc…

In order to cover the eastern and western Armenian language, the
author has added the western pronunciations in brackets, next to the
words with eastern pronunciations.

It is worth mentioning that the bibliography which is included in the
book is very diversified. The author has referred to Armenian,
English, Turkish, French and Arabic dictionaries, in addition to a
large number of books and sources about the Armenian language and
grammar. Index can be easily used to locate a word.

The book is the result of several years of compiling and gathering. It
could be very useful for those who lack knowledge of foreign
languages.

Avo Katerjian has published in 1996 a book dedicated to Nakhichevan
entitled `Armenian Nakhichevan or distorted NAXCIVAN’ (see link
below). He also has many articles in the Armenian press like
`Kantsasar’ (Aleppo), `Aztag’ (Beirut), `Droshag’ (Yerevan), `Horizon’
(Canada), `Asbarez’ (Los Angeles), `Abaraj’ (Karabakh), `Alik’
(Tehran).
