She brought us skyscraper Manolos, nameplate neck chains and
super-size-me corsages. They brought us bumper pack knickers and
Magic Shaper Shorts.

Patricia Field and Marks & Spencer? Hardly a fashion match made in
heaven but, come October, the Sex and the City stylist will launch
a 35-piece, one-off fashion range in Your M&S.

This is a retail coup that even the Topshop tycoon Sir Philip Green
couldn’t get his mitts on. "I wanted to get involved with a brand
that really understood women of all ages," asserts Field, who at 66
still sports miniskirts and hair the colour of chilli powder. And
she couldn’t have chosen better than Sir Stuart Rose’s mother ship,
whose advertising campaign stalwarts Twiggy, Erin O’Connor and Lily
Cole have long established themselves as emblems of its "something
for every woman, at every age" ethos.

Field’s exuberant style may threaten to pierce the M&S safety
net. However, the American stylist claims that her look started off
simple: "In my early teens, I wore jeans every day. I always dressed
simply; my hair is my only wildness." Born in New York to Greek and
Armenian parents, Field’s independent sartorial streak developed in
the face of her mother’s time-consuming professional life. "I made
my decisions very young, I never asked permission. This upbringing
is where my style starts."

Aged 24, Field opened her first fashion store in Manhattan’s Greenwich
Village. Three years later she was restless. She began to make
"things that we weren’t finding out there". In the early Nineties,
moving into film and television styling, Field made a life-changing
contact. Hired as a stylist on the set of Miami Rhapsody in 1995,
she encountered Sarah Jessica Parker. Three years later and the way
was paved for fashion’s most beloved character, Carrie Bradshaw.

Field’s eclectic approach to clothes was one powerful cog in the Sex
and the City machine. The sparky characterisation was mirrored by the
whimsical, memorable and, at times, eye-watering outfits. Carrie’s
puff-balls, Samantha’s shoulder pads and Charlotte’s prom dresses
burned an indelible mark on to women’s wardrobes. "Sex and the City
changed the way that women dress," Field cried. And she was right.

She won two Emmy awards, and an Academy award nomination in 2006
for The Devil Wears Prada. More recently she cast her eye back to the
fabulous four in the film version of SATC. Still based in New York, and
living large, she chooses to do so as a singleton but dates "primarily
women, but not exclusively". But can Britain’s women really be the
next Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda? Yes. Field made the best
of four very different women on set, four personalities that made up
the everywoman. How many times have you asked yourself which one you
are most like? In October, Patricia Field will help you find out.

New Concept Regulating Work With Mass Media To Be Developed

NEW CONCEPT REGULATING WORK WITH MASS MEDIA TO BE DEVELOPED

ARMENPRESS
May 22, 2008

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS: The studies made by international
specialists in Armenia show that we have serious issues with contacting
with mass media and negative traditions. Armenian Prime Minister
Tigran Sargsian said today at the government’s session that for
improving the quality of work of mass media with state bodies, it is
necessary to have the suggestions and remarks of the representatives
of the mass media.

He called on the latter to present their approaches over the issue. The
prime minister said that for increasing the efficiency of the work with
mass media the experience of the European countries has been studied
and technical support will be provided by the European partners. By
this, it is aimed to apply rules of ethics in the work of mass media
and give legislative regulation to the work of mass media.

Tigran Sargsian said that if a journalist does not get an answer from
the minister to his/her question, he/she states that the ministry is
not working transparently, but that, the prime minister said, does
not have any connection with the transparent or not transparent work
of the ministry. Such negative traditions, according to the prime
minister, promote the creation of yellow press as a result of which
serious media is dropping out of the attention.

He said the creation of new concept which will regulate the sphere will
promote the process of curing the moral and psychological atmosphere
in the country.

Tigran Sargsian said that heads of ministries and media services must
also participate in the creation of the concept.

ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT SPEAKER MEETS WITH TERRY DAVIS AND MARIOS GAROYAN

ARMENPRESS
May 22, 2008

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS: Armenian parliament Speaker Tigran
Torosian who is in Strasbourg to take part in the meeting of Council
of Europe member countries’ parliament heads, met today with Council
of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis.

The parliament press service told Armenpress that in a reference
to March 1 events in Yerevan Torosian said they shocked all. He
said Armenia saw numerous rallies since 1988 but not had such an
outcome. He said the tragic events on that day could not stem from
people’s social discontent, because their living standards have been
improving during the recent years and in January of this year the
pensions rose 60 percent and other salaries and wages also rose.

According to him, the assertions that police used force against
demonstrators is simplified. He said video materials show that there
were people among demonstrators armed with Molotov cocktails and metal
rods, who used grenades and plundered shops which are one kilometer
away from the demonstration’s scene.

He also spoke about a parliament ad hoc commission, set up in line
with PACE 1609 resolution which is to look into this and other issues
and give answers. He told Terry Davis that the parliament set up a
task force to study and offer proposals for improvement of electoral
processes and the law on Public TV and Radio so that the order of
electing members of the National Radio and TV Commission be fixed
by law.

He also said the parliament passed in the first reading a package
of changes to the law on mass gatherings which was approved by the
Venice Commission. The second reading will be in June and the law
will be made to comply fully with European standards.

In a reference to arrested people he said each case is being
examined carefully and the approach is that anyone who committed a
grave criminal offence must be held accountable and no one must be
persecuted for their political views.

Terry Davis welcomed creation of a parliament commission for making
inquiries into March 1 events.

He agreed that everyone who committed grave crimes must be punished
and no one must be persecuted for his or her political views.

Tigran Torosian also met with Marios Garoyan, the president of the
Cyprus parliament. Torosian express hope that relations between the
two countries and their parliaments will grow further.

Torosian said Cyprus’s experience in joining the EU is of cognitive
significance, especially that European integration is a priority of
Armenian foreign policy.

Marios Garoyan expressed hope that relations between Armenia and
his country and the constructive dialogue will deepen. Recalling his
Armenian origin he said it will be a factor to promote closer ties
with Armenia. The parliament press service said they discussed also
other issues of mutual interest.

PRIME MINISTER ORDERS CREATION OF FOUR NEW COMMITTEES

ARMENPRESS
May 22, 2008

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS: Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian ordered
to establish 4 ministerial committees- on financial-economic, social,
regional development and ecology, and state and legal issues.

Prime minister told at the government session today that all issues
which are to be discussed at government sessions will have to initially
go through these committees. These committees must plan their meetings
every Friday. They will have to consider also conceptual issues.

"Only by collective thinking we shall be able to work as a common
team," Tigran Sarkisian stressed. In his words, the efficiency
of the government’s performance is contingent on the pace of the
ongoing reforms.

The prime minister noted that a technical assistance was received from
Great Britain for improvement of Armenia’s administration system. He
said based on it a comprehensive program was developed to improve
the administration system.

Armenia-Turkey

On May 18 the Turkish published an article with such a title. The
article was dedicated to Parliament member Hakan Zoskun’s speech, which
was in its turn a response to ex-Ambassador Sukru Elekdag’s October
2007 statement about 70 thousand citizens of Armenia working in Turkey.

Internal Affairs Minister Besir Atalay answered the following to the
aforementioned question, "According to the visa regime between Armenia
and Turkey, Armenian citizens are usually granted 30-day tourist visa,
and their entry on the territory of Turkey is not a matter of special
attention. In 2007 53 thousand 108 citizens of Armenia entered Turkey
and 53 thousand 359 left its territory. In January-February 2008 6211
Armenian citizens arrived in Turkey and 6085 departed.

In 2007 8 Armenian citizens were deported from Turkey for illegal
stay in the country, and only one citizen in 2008."

The Minister also noted that in case of detaining illegal Armenian
migrants in Turkey the law enforcement structures report it to the
Employment and Social Issues Ministry, which organizes the deportation.

The Law Banning Demonstrations To Have Effect In Summer

THE LAW BANNING DEMONSTRATIONS TO HAVE EFFECT IN SUMMER

A1+
[08:08 pm] 22 May, 2008

The latest amendments to the "Law on conducting meetings, marches,
demonstrations and rallies" do not meet the requirements of the PACE
Resolution 1609. The latter required immediate nullification of 17
March changes.

"Here we evidently deal with a case of unjust manipulation", declares
Stepan Safarian, member of the "Heritage" Party.

He notices that NA Speaker Tigran Torossian proposed a bill "drafted
without a discussion and consultation".

He also reminds that Torossian had spoken for the 17 March changes
considering them necessary, important, and grounded.

"During the discussion we did not yet have the experimental conclusions
of the Venice Commission and the OSCE ODIHR. That is, Torossian
introduced a bill and without inner approval sent it to the Venice
Commission. Then it was put into circulation and discussed at the
commission without the experts’ conclusion. And on Monday we were
informed about the "experts’ conclusion", complains Safarian.

"There was only the conclusion of an Irishwoman expert."

Safarian also noticed some "exciting" details in the proposals of
implementation of the PACE Resolution terms and he is seriously
worried about them.

"It was enlightened in the documents that the law will take effect
after the second reading, i.e. in September. So, during all summer
we shall have to obey the 17 March changes banning rallies and
demonstrations", notices Stepan Safarian.
