Charge of a young gun

by Paul Daley

The Libs’ man-in-waiting faces a threat by Kevin Rudd’s mate –
opportunity permitting, of course.

LIBERAL leadership speculation orbits the ambitions of one man –
Malcolm Turnbull.

It is widely assumed he will be the next leader. But perhaps it is
time to cast the net wider, to look beyond the front pages to who
might come up the middle, if and when Brendan Nelson finally stumbles,
or is tripped.

It is largely a question of timing.

Turnbull would become leader tomorrow if the leadership "blew up" –
that is, if Brendan Nelson called for a spill of leadership positions
or if Turnbull challenged. That is unlikely. But with such a febrile
atmosphere inside the Liberals it would be foolish to rule out either
eventuality; the unanticipated can have disastrously magnified
consequences.

Understand this: while he is undeniably showing his leadership wares,
Turnbull is not setting deadlines. Like most Liberals, he purportedly
believes Nelson is a short- to medium-term proposition. He will not
force the inevitable now because he does not want Nelson to say he was
not given "a fair go".

Such a cry from John Howard helped paralyse the Liberals in the late
1980s and early ’90s, after Andrew Peacock undermined his
leadership. Turnbull will not be held responsible for a repeat.

He is well aware that if Nelson’s tenure drags on into 2009, a
possible election year, another candidate may emerge.

At 42, Joe Hockey is almost eight years younger than Nelson, more than
a decade younger than Turnbull and nine years younger than deputy
leader Julie Bishop. Hockey entered Parliament in 1996 and served on
John Howard’s front bench in a string of portfolios from 1998. Nelson
made the front bench in 2001, Bishop in 2003 and Turnbull in
2006. Experience counts in politics.

Hockey is close to Kevin Rudd. He knows the Prime Minister better than
anyone else in the Opposition. He likes to tell friends: "Kevin’s a
mate. But really he’s full of shit – I know his weaknesses."

>From 2001 to 2007, Hockey and Rudd shared a weekly spot on the
Sunrise television program, where they exchanged light-hearted
banter. It helped Rudd enormously in the public recognition
stakes. Similarly, it made a political brand of Hockey, a great bear
of a man and a considerably more solid parliamentary performer than
Rudd.

Friends argue he brings a huge dose of humanity – and policy reform –
to the Liberals. His father, Richard, is of Palestinian-Armenian
descent. A Catholic, Hockey is the only person with a Palestinian
background in Federal Parliament.

In late April, he attended a ceremony in the Israeli desert capital,
Be’er Sheva, for the opening of a park to commemorate the 1917 Battle
of Beersheba when Australian Light Horsemen audaciously stormed the
Turkish trenches and captured the town. It was the beginning of the
end of hundreds of years of Ottoman occupation of Palestine.

The Beersheba story resonates with Hockey, whose paternal grandfather
was deputy administrator of the town under British mandate. Hockey
used the charge, in his maiden speech, as a metaphor for seizing
opportunity.

He was one of three Australian federal politicians at the dedication
of the park in Be’er Sheva, as the city is known today. Two heads of
state, our Governor-General Michael Jeffery and Israel’s President
Shimon Peres, were also present. But it was to Hockey that young
Australians, dressed in boardies and VB singlets, flocked for
photographs.

Little wonder NSW Labor was hugely relieved when Hockey recently ruled
out a switch to state politics, perhaps – recent reports maintain –
initially suggested by Turnbull himself to get the sizeable member for
North Sydney out of the big pond.

"We’d have been f—ed if Hockey became leader of the state Libs. He’d
win the next election," says a prominent member of the NSW
Right. Such, it seems, is the potency of the Sunrise factor.

Hockey was one of two ministers who privately urged Howard to quit in
favour of Peter Costello prior to the last election. Howard and Hockey
had not spoken properly since the election. But they have buried the
hatchet and the younger man thanked the former prime minister for the
opportunities he had given him in government.

Howard, despite last year’s loss, enjoys enormous influence. The value
of his patronage should not be dismissed.

But will Hockey get the chance? He is telling friends that "right now"
he is genuinely not interested – a politician’s answer, in every
sense, because the leadership is not vacant.

Hockey has two young children and is relishing being a far less absent
father and partner. To friends, he makes no secret of his ambition but
is not overtly promoting himself as a contender. It is an approach
that might appeal to Liberals put off by Turnbull’s bullishness.

In the near future, the Liberal leadership must decide whether to
oppose the Government’s substantive industrial relations legislation
(covering, among other things, the re-introduction of unfair dismissal
laws), thereby offering the Government a trigger for an early double
dissolution election.

The Liberals hold more than 20 seats by under 4per cent; unless things
improved dramatically, they would lose many of them.

Turnbull, it is safe to wager, is more cautious about opposing the
industrial relations legislation in the Senate, where the Coalition
has a majority until July. After that, it needs support of either
independent Nick Xenophon or Steve Fielding. Hockey, as the previous
industrial relations minister, might also think carefully about
fighting another election on that front.

The debate could yet spill into the leadership tensions. In politics,
as in life, the big opportunity arises rarely.

It is there to be seized; you cannot dictate its timing. Consider
Howard and Costello. Then consider Joe Hockey’s light horsemen.

Ukraine Drilling Update – Karlavskoye 101 well

TRANSEURO ENERGY PRESS RELEASE

May 26, 2008

Vancouver, Canada: – Transeuro Energy Corp. ("Transeuro" or the
"Company") provides an update of operations at the Karlavskoye 101
("Karl 101") well in Ukraine. The well has been drilled to a depth of
3,480m with continued gas shows, and has intersected the C15 reservoir
interval. As per Ukraine regulations a downhole surge test is
currently being performed to confirm fluid type. Thus far gas has been
produced to surface from the well. Photo’s are on

The C15 is the fifth reservoir interval intersected by the Karl 101
well with up to three more reservoir intervals still to be
drilled. The top interval, the Turonian was found at 2,940m, the C12
at 3,100m, C13 at 3,216m, C14 at 3,380m and C15 at 3,435m. The first
downhole surge test with the well at 3,314m produced gas to surface
from the Turonian, C12 and C13 intervals. Gas shows have been seen in
each reservoir, and logs obtained over each interval indicate a gross
gas bearing interval to date of 540m.

Following completion of the surge test the Company plans to continue
drilling to the base of the next reservoir target interval, the C16 at
approximately 3,550m, and plans to conduct an openhole flow test in
order to further evaluate the reservoirs and the commerciality of the
well. Test equipment is being mobilized to site for this purpose.

The ‘discovered resources’ attributed to the Karlavskoye field by
Fekete Associates Inc. under the Canadian 51-101 reserves reporting
standards has increased to a mean estimate of 474 billion cubic feet
of gas (85 million barrels of oil equivalent). Under the terms of the
Joint Activity Agreement with the local government partner
‘Crymgeologiya’, Transeuro has 72% of the profits derived from the
development of the Karlavskoye field. Upon closing of the JVA with RAG
() of Austria, Transeuro will hold 36% and RAG 36% of the
profits.

Discovered resources are defined in the Canadian Oil and Gas
Evaluation Handbook, "Discovered resources are those quantities of oil
and gas estimated on a given date to be remaining in, plus those
quantities already produced from, known accumulations. Discovered
resources are divided into economic and uneconomic categories, with
the estimated future recoverable portion classified as reserves and
contingent resources, respectively. There is no certainty that it will
be commercially viable to produce any portion of the resources."

Transeuro Energy Corp. is involved in the acquisition of petroleum and
natural gas rights, the exploration for, and development and
production of crude oil, condensate and natural gas. The Company’s
properties are located in Canada, Ukraine and Armenia, and through
majority ownership in Eaglewood Energy Inc, in Papua New Guinea.

Barrel of oil equivalent ("boe") amounts may be misleading,
particularly if used in isolation. A boe conversion ratio has been
calculated using a conversion rate of six thousand cubic feet of
natural gas to one barrel and is based on an energy equivalent
conversion method application at the burner tip and does not
necessarily represent an economic value equivalent at the wellhead.

Man Arrested In NoHo Double Murder

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. A man was in custody on Thursday for allegedly
killing two other men in North Hollywood, police said.

Avetis Vartanyan, 24, was booked on suspicion of murder, according to
the Los Angeles Police Department. Police were looking for other
suspects in connection with the case.

The violence began around 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oxnard Street and Whitsett
Avenue in the parking lot of a shopping plaza, LAPD Officer Karen
Smith said.

Police sent to the scene found Artak Karamyan, 28, wounded. A short
time later, police found Paylak Harutyunyan, 29, wounded near Vanowen
Street and Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Both men died.

Vartanyan was detained — with the help of a police dog — a short
time after the shooting while trying to leave the area, police
said. Vartanyan was placed under arrest Wednesday and was being held
without bail, according to the sheriff’s department Web site.

Police recovered a pistol that they suspect Vartanyan had hidden in
the yard of a home, along with a second handgun found in an abandoned
vehicle at the crime scene, authorities said.

Detectives believe the shootings were the result of a dispute among a group
of men.

Man stabbed to death in Del Taco lot

Man stabbed to death in Del Taco lot
Police say dispute over a woman led to a Glendale man being slain near
Burbank border.
By Jason Wells

NORTHWEST GLENDALE – Two men, who were arrested on suspicion of murder in the
Saturday stabbing death of a 30-year-old Glendale man, are scheduled to be
arraigned today, authorities said.

Avetis Barnasyan, 24, is accused of stabbing Hayk Torosyan in the upper body
during a fight in the Del Taco parking lot at 2101 W. Glenoaks Blvd. at
about 2:15 a.m. Saturday before fleeing the scene, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom
Lorenz said.

Police found Torosyan, who had tried to drive away after the attack, bleeding
in his car from an unknown number of stab wounds about a block away from the
fast-food restaurant, Lorenz said. Torosyan was taken to Los Angeles
County-USC Medical Center, where doctors later pronounced him dead.

An autopsy to determine the number of wounds and exact cause of death was
scheduled to be completed today, said Ed Winter, assistant chief of the Los
Angeles County coroner’s office.

Torosyan and Barnasyan, also a Glendale resident, were in a feud over a
woman that `they both mutually knew,’ Lorenz said.

The fight started when Torosyan – who arrived with his friend, 40-year-old
North Hollywood resident Brian Herbert – confronted Barnasyan in the parking
lot over the woman, Lorenz said. Sometime during the scuffle, Barnasyan
retrieved a knife and stabbed Torosyan, he added.

Barnasyan fled the scene but returned to cooperate with authorities, Lorenz
said. Herbert, who had stayed at the scene of the attack, was also arrested
on suspicion of murder since he had arrived to `engage in a fight or some type
of confrontation … and as a result, committed a criminal act and then
someone died,’ Lorenz added.

It was business as usual Monday at the Del Taco. While the restaurant has a
24-hour drive-through, workers at the restaurant said they were not on shift
Saturday morning and hadn’t heard about the stabbing.

Barnasyan and Herbert are in police custody and are expected to be arraigned
today after detectives present their murder case to the Los Angeles County
district attorney’s office.

The incident occurred on the Burbank border – the restaurant is inside
Burbank’s jurisdiction, the parking lot in Glendale’s. It is Glendale’s second
homicide of the year.

In the first, the district attorney’s office in March filed murdercharges
against 27-year-old Eagle Rock resident Ana Regina Lim for the death of her
20-month-old baby.

Mikea had been in a coma since March 5, when she was taken to Glendale
Memorial Hospital from her grandparents’ home – where she and Lim were
staying – with severe head injuries, police said.

Lim was arrested and then released on $100,000 bail for child-endangerment
charges, but was arrested a day later on suspicion of murder after Mikea was
transferred to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and declared brain-dead.
She was later taken off life support and died.

A shooting death in January at Forest Lawn cemetery occurred in Los Angeles’
jurisdiction along the Glendale border.

Communists Accuse New ‘Indiana Jones’ Movie of Anti-Soviet Propagand

Communists Accuse New ‘Indiana Jones’ Movie of Anti-Soviet Propaganda
By VOA News
24 May 2008

Some Russian Communist Party members are calling for the latest Indiana
Jones movie to be banned in Russia, saying it is crude, anti-Soviet
propaganda.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth movie in the
Indiana Jones series, stars actor Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, an
archaeologist in 1957 battling KGB agents for a skull with mystic powers.
The film opened in Russia Thursday in more than 800 theaters, but members of
the Communist Party in St. Petersburg charge its portrayal of the Soviets
unfairly distorts their role in history.
One Communist Party member Andrei Gindos called Ford and his co-star, actress
Cate Blanchett, "running dogs of the CIA" (U.S. Central Intelligence
Agency). He also said they should be barred from entering Russia.
In the first three Indiana Jones movies, the fictional archaeologist battled
Nazis and an evil Indian cult.

Ford shareholders are weighing billionaire Kirk Kerkorian’s offer to buy
their shares at $8.50 a piece after the company’s shares dropped under $7 on
Friday
Russ Stallard of Shelby Township owns 5,000 shares and is ready to sell at
Kerkorian’s prices. He had thought Ford was a good investment. "But now with
the gas prices, I’m not sure," he said. Still, he was considering selling his

buying a few more with the profit.

Night of violence has Valley bracing for deadly summer

Night of violence has Valley bracing for deadly summer
Greuel, Alarcon push for gang intervention programs
By Rachel Uranga, Staff Writer
[email protected]
Article Last Updated: 05/22/2008 12:11:01 AM PDT

As police moved Wednesday to beef up patrols in the San Fernando Valley after
one of the bloodiest nights in years, residents of North Hollywood and other
neighborhoods struggled to make sense of the rash of shootings that left two
dead and eight wounded.
"It is so scary," said Sajedeh Moalk, who was behind the counter of J&C Food
Store, less than 15 feet from where one of two fatal shootings in North
Hollywood broke out. "I have never seen anything like this."
The Valley saw a total of six shootings in a four-hour period Tuesday, but
police say only the North Hollywood fatalities were related. They say at least
two of the other four shootings were gang-related.
In response, the Los Angeles Police Department is adding patrols in North
Hollywood and the Northeast Valley, said Deputy Chief Michel Moore.
"It’s senseless, disheartening and discouraging," Moore said. "There is
nothing in recent memory with this many victims. … It is highly unusual."
The shooting spree brought the year-to-date Valley homicide toll to 30, with
police and residents bracing for the summer months ahead, when violence
traditionally peaks.
"We are anticipating a hot summer, and things happen when it gets above 100
degrees," said Councilman Richard Alarc n, whose district includes Pacoima,
where two shootings Tuesday left three wounded. Alarc n said he is pushing
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to speed up the funding of intervention programs in
the area before summer. Both Alarc n and Councilwoman Wendy Greuel, who
represents North Hollywood, are doubling efforts to build Neighborhood Watch
programs.
The brazen gun attacks started in Northridge about 6 p.m Tuesday, when a gray
SUV with four men inside pulled alongside a 16-year-old boy walking near
Wilbur Avenue and Parthenia Street. The boy told police he struggled with one
of the men, who stepped out of the car and pointed a pistol at him, while
another person emerged from the car and shot him with a shotgun.
An hour later, a fight broke out among nearly a dozen Armenian men outside a
restaurant at Whitsett Avenue and Oxnard Street. The men appeared to have
been arguing, police said, when a number of them pulled out guns and firedoff
more than 20 shots. An Armenian male identified as Artak Karamyan, 28, died at
the scene.
Police said a car-to-car gunbattle ensued, and the body of Paylak
Harutyunyan, 29, was dumped at Coldwater Canyon Avenue and Vanowen Street.
Avetis Vartanyan, 24, has been booked on charges of homicide. Police have
suspects in at least two other shootings, but no other arrests had been made
by midevening Wednesday.
About 8:30 p.m., police said, violence broke out in Arleta when a man in a
large, dark SUV pulled up alongside a car carrying four males.
Police said it appears he sprayed the car with eight rounds, shattering
windows. Bullets hit the driver’s shoulder and back, and struck three others.
The gravely injured driver – whose name has not been released – drove them to
Pacifica Hospital of the Valley.
About 20 minutes later, along the 15000 block of Nurmi Street in Sylmar, four
men in a dark car shot an unidentified man.
Then at 9:45 p.m., two Latino men with shaved heads and white shirts drove by
a house in the 1200 block of Vaughn Street and shouted out a gang name
before firing more than eight rounds. The bullets struck a 21-year-old
African-American woman and 22-year-old African-American man. Police said it
doesn’t appear racially motivated.
The victims’ names have not been released.
Despite the bloodshed, Moore points out that overall violent crime in the
Valley continues to fall and gang-related homicides are half – down from 18to
nine – what they were at the same time last year. Still, he said, "we can’t
afford nights like last night."
"All of a sudden, the Valley exploded; the radio was going crazy," said Lt.
Ted Matthews, who oversees detectives at LAPD’s Foothill Division. "It was a
crazy night. I turned the corner to come into the station (that night) and I
thought, there is the full moon."

Bulgarian Court Rules in Favor of Armenian Genocide Recognition

Bulgarian Court Rules in Favor of Armenian Genocide Recognition

24 May 2008, Saturday

The District Administrative Court in Bulgaria’s Danube city of Ruse rejected
Friday the appeals against the declaration of the City Council recognizing
the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

The appeals were tabled to the Court by the Ruse District Governor Mariya
Dimova, and by city counselors from the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rightsand
Freedoms party.

The Court ruling states that the declaration recognizing the genocide over
Armenians and Bulgarians in the Ottoman Empire could not be disputed because
it was not an administrative act, it was only declarative, and had no legal
consequences.

The declaration recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire
between 1915 and 1922 was adopted by the Ruse City Council on April 17.
