His Holiness Garegin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All
Armenians congratulated the nation on the Republic Day:

"On the occasion of the Republic Day, when we are celebrating the 90th
anniversary of proclamation of the Republic of Armenia, we convey our
greetings from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and render our
blessing to our beloved people of Armenia, Artsakh and Diaspora.

The restoration of the Armenian statehood on the days of the May
battles was a great event for our people, the saved Motherland, to
which the Armenian nation devoted all its strength, creating its
national-state life.

The memories and achievemnets of those days inspire and encourage us in
our devotion to the Motherland and the love for Church, serving our
Motherland and the bright future of our people.

We offer our sincere prayers to the Almighty, asking Him to grant peace
to our Motherland and bless the fair efforts of our people and devotion
for the sake of prosperity of Armenia and Artsakh and the happy life of
our world-spread compatriots.

May the Divine Grace be with us and everyone today and forever. Amen. "

Hundreds of activists gathered in front of the U.S. Mission at the
United Nations in New York City with Darfur advocacy leaders to deliver
thousands of handprints and messages from all over the country
demanding decisive U.S. action to end genocide in Darfur and promote
peace for Sudan, reported the Armenian National Committee of America,
Eastern Region (ANCA ER).

"The Armenian National Committee of America will continue to work to
make sure that action is taken in Darfur. Whether making sure that
peacekeepers are sent, divestment is taking place amongst the various
states, or overall awareness is brought about, we must do all we can to
stop this genocide," commented Karine Birazian, Eastern Region
Executive Director for the ANCA.

Speakers included: Gerald LeMelle, Executive Director, Africa Action;
Eric Gioia, New York City Council Member; Yahya Mohammad Osman, Vice
President, Darfur Rehabilitation Project; Motasim Adam, President,
Darfur People’s Association of New York; Rev. Fr. Mesrob Lakissian,
Pastor, St. Illuminator’s Armenian Apostolic Church; Mohamed Yahya,
Executive Director, Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy; Rev.
Herbert Daughtry, Pastor, House of the Lord Church in Brooklyn and head
of the National Religious Leaders of African Ancestry Concerned about
Darfur, and Michael Perlman and Jodie Manross who provided an
inspirational performance.

Eric Gioia, New York City councilman, commented "our children will say
to us in 10 years, in 20 years, when you found out, what did you do?
And how can any of us look them in the eye and say I did nothing. Good
people, when good people say they stand for something, the question you
have to ask them is what are we willing to do about it, and if the
answer is I am not willing to do anything that the sad truth is you
don’t stand firm."

Father Mesrob Lakissian, Pastor of St. Illuminator’s Armenian Apostolic
Church, stated: "we the children and grandchildren of the survivors of
the Armenian Genocide of 1915 remember that it was the kindness of
strangers and aid that came from all over the world especially from the
United States that saved our ancestors. Today, we thank God for his
deliverance and pledge to make our voices heard in the face of evil and
injustice¦"

Cosponsoring the event along with Africa Action were, African Services
Committee, American Jewish World Service, Armenian National Committee
of America, Chadian Association of North America, Damanga Coalition for
Freedom and Democracy, DarfurMetro, Darfur Rehabilitation Project,

Project, Genocide Intervention Network, Making a Difference (MAD), NY
City Coalition for Darfur, Rock to Save Darfur, Shine a Ray of Hope,
STAND and TransAfrica Forum.

The U.N. Security Council has primary responsibility to maintain
international peace and security. The Presidency of the Council rotates
monthly, according to the English alphabetical listing of its member
States, and on June 1, 2008, the United States will take over the
presidency. Over 450,000 people have lost their lives and millions have
been displaced in the ongoing genocide in Darfur. Although the U.S.
government has acknowledged this genocide, it has failed to take the
necessary action to protect the people of Darfur. Africa Action, the
ANCA, and rally supporters are calling on President Bush to assert U.S.
leadership in support of a multinational intervention to stop the
ongoing genocide in Darfur.

Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Tigran
Torosyan issued a congratulatory message on the occasion of the
Republic Day. The message states:

`Dear compatriots,

Not having got rid of the cruel experience of genocide, ninety years
ago our people managed to unite its divided strength and win the
battles in Sardarapat, Gharakilisa and Aparan thanks to freedom-loving
spirit and the firm desire to restore statehood.

Although the First Republic of Armenia survived for three years only,
it gave the spiritual power, due to which not only the Armenian
statehood was restored, but also Artsakh was liberated at the end of
the 20th century.

I congratulate you on the Republic Day, assured that our achievements
are already irreversible, and the path of democracy and reforms is the
way having no alternative and will lead us towards the Motherland our
predecessors wished about.’

Russia-Turkey relations represent no danger for Armenia

Russia-Turkey relations represent no danger for
Armenia
27.05.2008 17:47 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Alan Kasayev, the head of RIA
Novosti division for Baltic States and the CIS is
confident that Armenia is really Russia’s strategic
ally. -It’s quite obvious that with Armenia’s help,
Russia keeps control over the entire region. This is
strategic partnership. However, being less attractive
for investors, Armenia’s doesn’t have enough weight in
the region,- he said in an interview with
PanARMENIAN.Net.

According to Kasayev, the Russian leadership builds up
relations with Armenia’s neighbors on the principle of
mutually beneficial cooperation. -As to Azerbaijan,
both Russia and Azerbaijan are both sources of raw
materials and business rivals. From this standpoint,
relations with Azerbaijan are very important. It’s one
the reasons why Moscow doesn’t press on Baku in the
Karabakh issue. Russia has to assist Armenia in
normalizing relations with neighbors. It tries to
perform this mission without pressing either on
Yerevan, the ally, or on reliable partners in Baku and
Ankara,- he said.

-Russia-Turkey relations represent no danger for
Armenia. They do not develop to the prejudice of
thirds states, specifically Armenia. I can even say
that current Russia-Turkey relations are better than
relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan. The euphoria
is over. Istanbul doesn’t eye Baku as a `younger
brother’ any longer. As to transport projects
bypassing Armenia, being mere political projects, they
lack an economic constituent,- Kasayev said.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The President of Nagorno Karabakh
doesn’t eye the forthcoming meeting of the Armenian
and Azerbaijani Presidents as an achievement.

-Nevertheless, it can be viewed as progress, for the
talks themselves can be described as progress,- Bako
Sahakian told reporters in Yerevan.

Commenting on the situation at the line of contact,
President Sahakian said that -firing is a permanent
phenomenon but we endeavor to decrease the frequency
of skirmishes,- IA Regnum reports.

President Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia and Ilham Aliyev
of Azerbaijan will meet on June 7 during CIS informal
summit in Saint Petersburg. This will be the first
meeting since election Sargsyan the President of
Armenia.

Armenia’s development doesn’t depend on Russia
27.05.2008 18:02 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenia’s development doesn’t depend
on Russia, since it’s impossible to fancy Moscow
pursuing anti-Armenian policy, Alan Kasayev, the head
of RIA Novosti division for Baltic States and the CIS,
said in an interview with PanARMENIAN.Net

-The major task Armenia is charged with is to
elaborate correct investment policy. Military industry
is not operating; the enterprises transferred to
Russia within Property for Debt agreement do not
function over many reasons. Lacking raw materials,
Armenia should make accents on education and IT.
Investments in the fields will help development of the
republic,- he said.

South Caucasus security to be in focus of Moscow talks with RA FM Mi

South Caucasus security to be in focus of Moscow talks
with RA Foreign Minister
27.05.2008 18:15 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The rapid development of relations
between Moscow and Yerevan is conditioned by rich
political dialog which creates favorable atmosphere
for perfection of cooperation in various fields, said
a Russian Foreign Ministry official.

-The visit of Armenia’s Foreign Minister will take
place during a period when both Russia and Armenia
confirmed their determination to preserve the line
taken up previous leaders,- said Andrey Nesterenko.

-We are confident that the visit will help to cement
the Armenian-Russian cooperation on the world arena,-
he added, the RF MFA press office reported.

Commenting on the agenda of the talks, Mr Nesterenko
said, -We plan to coordinate Russia and Armenia’s
approaches to urgent international issues. We also
count for further close cooperation within the CIS,
CSTO, UN, CoE and OSCE,- he said.

Security and stability in the South Caucasus will also
be in focus. Moscow supposes that business contacts
facilitate to resolution of conflicts in the region,
according to him.

Touching upon the Karabakh problem, the diplomat said,
-Russia’s stance on the issue is unchangeable. We
intend to assist the sides in reaching a mutually
acceptable decision and stand as guarantor.-

Alan Kasayev: war unlikely in Karabakh within next several years

PanARMENIAN.Net

Alan Kasayev: war unlikely in Karabakh within next
several years
27.05.2008 18:16 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Resumption of military operations in
Nagorno Karabakh is unlikely within next 5 years, at
least, said the head of RIA Novosti division for
Baltic States and the CIS.

-Azerbaijan is building up an image of `investment
attractiveness’, is trying to resolve problems with
Iran and determine status of the Caspian Sea, whose
basin includes five states, each presenting its
claims,- Alan Kasayev said in an interview with
PanARMENIAN.Net.

-I would also like to mention that the election
developments in Azerbaijan are complicated by internal
instability. The Anti-Armenian propaganda and warlike
rhetoric is used with a purpose to unite the nation.
You should nor forget that over half of the
Azerbaijani population are illiterate rural residents.
On the whole, Azerbaijan is poorly developed and
poorly educated country living at expense of oil
income. Agriculture is not developing. There is no
industry with an exception for a couple of refineries.
The whole population of the country can’t concentrate
in the capital. So, the actively created image of an
enemy is one of the elements of consolidation of the
society,- he said.

Armenia marks Day of the First Republic May 28, 2008
28.05.2008 12:09 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenia is marking Day of the First
Republic today.

Having defeated the Turkish army in Sardarapat May 26,
Armenian troops succeeded in stopping the Turkish
intervention in the Transcaucasus and rescue Armenia
from complete elimination.

The Armenian Republic was proclaimed the Armenian
National Council May 28, 1918 in Tiflis after the
decline of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative
Republic.

May 29 the western and eastern bureaus of ARF
Dashnaktsutyun appointed Hovhannes Kajaznuni the
first-ever Prime Minister of independent Armenia with
Yerevan as capital. The last Prime Minister was Simon
Vratsyan.

The Republic of Armenia had existed for two years in
all. On December 2, 1920, the troops of the 11th Red
Army entered Yerevan and the republic became soviet.

In 1991 the Armenian SSR proclaimed independence and
the parliament announced May 28 a legal holiday.

A monument to Sardarapat battle heroes was inaugurated
in 1968.
