Fifty-four people remain in police custody over the mass riots that
occurred in Yerevan on March 1, Sona Truzyan, a press officer for
the Armenian Prosecutor General’s Office, told Interfax.

The March 1 riots followed the February 19 presidential elections in
Armenia. They were organized by supporters of former president Levon
Ter-Petrosian, who disagreed with the outcome of the elections. Ten
people were killed and over 250 were wounded in the riots.

Ter-Petrosian’s supporters have still not recognized the outcome of
the elections and are planning to file a lawsuit with the European
Court of Human Rights.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
