NEGOTIATION PROCESS WILL CONTINUE: MATHEW BRYZA

BUCHAREST, APRIL 3, ARMENPRESS: Armenian president-elect, prime
minister Serzh Sarkisian who is in Bucharest, Romania, attending
a NATO summit, met today with cochairmen of the OSCE Minsk Group-
Yuri Merzlyakov (Russia), Bernard Fassier (France) and Mathew Bryza
(USA) for an exchange of opinions over the process of resolution of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The meeting was attended also by Andrzei Kasprzyk, the personal
representative of the OSCE chairman-in-office for monitoring the
ceasefire regime.
Armenpress correspondent reported from Bucharest that an overall
assessment of the current status of the talks was given during the
meeting. The cochairmen presented the results of their yesterday’s
meeting with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev. Serzh Sarkisian
expressed concern over the latest diplomacy of Azerbaijan
and frequented breaches of truce on the line of contact in
Nagorno-Karabakh.
Serzh Sarkisian has reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to peaceful
settlement of the conflict within the frameworks of the OSCE Minsk
Group and based on the package of proposals which are on the table.
Asked by Armenpress to comment on the meeting the U.S. cochairman
Mathew Bryza said," We know the president-elect and we know what kind
of a personality he is and I believe that we shall continue the talks.
It is obvious now that the negotiation process will continue. What
is important is that presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan have
an opportunity to meet and communicate after the inauguration of
Armenian president-elect."
In a reference to the current stage of the talks Mathew Bryza said
Azerbaijan is also for continuation of the process, ‘despite a number
of several recent critical moments."
"I am confident that the process will go on and I hope that it will
not last long and will end soon, but I can not predict when. I feel
there is progress.
Today is the beginning. We have to move forward step by step,’ he said.
Regarding a possible change of the negotiations format, Mathew Bryza
said there is the OSCE Minsk Group and there is no need to change it."
In comments on the meeting Serzh Sarkisian said he saw that the
cochairmen were optimistic.
"I think they have grounds, from their perspective, to be optimistic. I
will share my personal impressions if there is an occasion to meet
with the other negotiating party. I will not object to meeting with
Azerbaijani president on the sidelines of any forum, if Azerbaijani
president has such a wish," Sarkisian said.
