YEREVAN, MARCH 28, ARMENPRESS: Anahit Bakhshian, a parliament member
from the opposition Zharangutyun (Heritage) party, agreed yesterday
that allegations claiming that a police vehicle ran over opposition
demonstrators on March 1 were not true.

She said this to the Armenian Service of the RFE/RL. Earlier she
had sent an open letter to chief prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepian with an
attached CD, which she said, grounded rumors that the car ran over
several demonstrators near the French embassy in Yerevan.

Sona Truzian, a spokeswoman for the Office of the Prosecutor-General,
said the chief prosecutor ordered to make a careful investigation
into the allegations.

As part of the investigation Anahit Bakhshian was summoned yesterday
for questioning by a special unit of prosecutors as a witness. Truzian
said during the interrogation in the presence of her lawyer, the CD
was carefully examined following which the parliament member accepted
that the car did not run over the demonstrators.

"The police car moved with a high speed through the people, but no
one was hurt. I saw it with my own eyes," she was quoted as saying.

Rumors were circulating in Yerevan on March 1 that the car ran over
at least two demonstrators.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
