YEREVAN, MARCH 5, NOYAN TAPAN. A pilot program of introduction of
early childhood development and pre-school education standards is
being implemented in the regions of Ararat and Lori. According to the
information provided to a Noyan Tapan correspondent by the General
Education Department of the RA Ministry of Education and Science,
the main object of the project being implemented by the financial and
methodological assistance of the World Bank and the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is the improvement of the the quality and
accessibility of the services of the pre-school education in the sphere
of children’s early childhood development, in particular, paying a
special attention to the problem on the inclusion of children from
socially unprovided families into the pre-school educational system.

According to the same source, in pilot programs the problems concerning
a productive preparation for elementary education of children of
pre-school senior age: aged 5, will especially be attached importance
to. The complete inclusion will provide equal starting conditions
for children to continue the education in an elementary school, will
contribute to the decrease in the number of pupils staying behind,
as well as will create stable bases for the development and formation
of their personal and social skills.

It is envisaged to reach the inclusion of those aged 5 to 30 percent
during three years, moreover, 50 percent of them must be from poor
families.

At the same time, an alternative project of pre-school education is
being experimented in the above-mentioned regions, which is envisaged
for parents and children living in rural settlements. In summer months
during the period of field work pre-school institutions are to work
by two sessions, in the evening hours as well.

In addition to this, the pre-school education is of great economic
significance. The investments made in this sphere have a long-term
influence upon society and development of economy. According to
the studies made by experts, every 1 U.S. dollars invested in the
pre-school education and early childhood development of children
later brings a result of approximately 7 U.S. dollars.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
