SUMGAYIT WAS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS MILITARIZATION OF THE KARABAKH ISSUE

On February 25 RA Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian participated in the
opening of the international conference on "Tolerance and Xenophobia
in the South Caucasian region." The conference is dedicated to the 20th
anniversary of the Armenian massacres in Sumgayit in February, 1988.
Addressing the participants, Minister Oskanian expressed gratitude
to the organizers of the conference for the initiative. The Minister
suggested considering the topic in three layers: Armenia, the region
as a whole and the global level.
Speaking about the events in Sumgayit and the consequences,
the Minister noted that Sumgayit was the first step towards the
militarization of the Karabakh issue and the attest to solve the
conflict via force.
Minister Oskanian also turned to the presidential elections of February
19, stressing the importance of tolerance and unity in ensuring the
stability and development in the country.
