Secretary General of the European Union Javier Solana congratulated
the Armenian people on the occasion of holding peaceful and competitive
presidential elections.

"I congratulate the Armenian people on holding competitive presidential
elections on February 19 and high voter turnout. I was satisfied with
the preliminary conclusion of the international observers saying that
the elections mostly corresponded to the OSCE and Council of Europe
commitments and standards.

I expect that after the elections all the political forces in
Armenia will continue working in a responsible way. The complaints
and shortcomings registered by the observers must be investigated in
detail. All disagreements must be solved via dialogue.

The European Union remains committed to further reinforcement
of cooperation with Armenia within the framework of the European
Neighborhood Policy. The election of the new President of Armenia is
also an opportunity to take steps in the direction of improvement of
relations with neighbors, including new efforts for finding a solution
to the Karabakh conflict. The EU continues to support the efforts of
the European Union."

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
