There are no topics out of discussion – there is civil cowardice

On these days of presidential election when Armenia has turned into a
"psychiatric ward", it would be useful to recall the events of the
recent presidential election in Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in 2007. I
hope it is not perceived as propaganda on the day of the election.
In NKR 12000 people, despite the climate of intimidation, encouragement
of civil and political venality, active support from first of all the
Armenian government and the ARF Dashnaktsutyun, made It clear that
nobody will be able to impose their will on Karabakh, especially
regarding the essential national existence issues. This election
was and will remain a bugbear for most people who had to report to
Yerevan that "it is calm in Baghdad".
A handful of people who realized the political and their personal
perspective challenged the people whose aim was to create favorable
conditions in NKR for the return of the territories of Lowland
Karabakh.
Certainly, it was possible thanks to their leader Masis Mayilyan who
fulfilled the most important political goal in the life of NKR in the
past few years. However, a far more important thing happened. Thousands
of people believed in themselves and the ability to self-organize,
and very many people realized the threat posed to their Homeland
which they desire to instrumentalize in squabbles in Yerevan.
During the presidential campaign in NKR the government and their
miserable accomplices assisted by venal "mass media" tried to question
that fundamental changes in Armenia are possible and that it is
inadmissible to sail downwind when the society and the political sphere
in Yerevan have always been ready to give up the Karabakh issue which
means ridding of the Karabakh province and returning it to the foe.
The reelected president of NKR stated after the election that the
issue of return of territories is "not discussed". It is discussed. In
Yerevan the developments developed the way they should develop, and
the reanimation of the ideology of defeatism of Levon Ter-Petrosyan
is again up to date.
Earlier most conformists among Yerevan-based and Stepanakert-based
patriots thought that Serge Sargsyan’s innumerable statements about
the possibility of return of "some territories" are the worst to
expect from the Armenian leadership. It is not so terrible, and if
it is possible, it is not known when. However, there are defeatist
politicians who are cooler, whom the Armenian people are longing for. I
could have said it the other way, such as "the Armenian society is
waiting" or in some other milder way but I say "the Armenian people"
because this bourgeois crowd which desires revenge and satisfaction
at any price is the same Armenian people who shout hooray when they
are told that for Armenia an army of 11 thousand is enough, that
Karabakh will be returned and "closed down". That the struggle for
the international recognition of the genocide is childishness. The
people who have no memory, no conscience will never become a nation.
This situation was created with the talent and creativity of the
present government. And it is not a Philistine phrase or a propaganda
thesis, this is what is there. If we make an effort to see further than
the tip of our nose (the consequence of suspicious anthropology), we’ll
see that it is not so important whether the defeatist radicals will
come to power or not. A group like that will come to power sooner of
later, in this country which is more or less full and spiritually void.
No aspirant to the post of president was found who would have a steady
patriotic stance, who would not only be convinced that no patch of
land can be returned to the barbarians but would also realize why and
how it should not be returned. Now a question occurs to be asked to the
Karabakhis, not to the so-called president of NKR or some official, but
to the officers of the NKR armed force and those who defended Karabakh
with weapon in hand. Will our Homeland cooperate with defeatists?
Power cannot be fully given to an alien political element, pretending
that they will do for You everything that is needed. They will do it
for You, they will leave You without a Homeland. You will have to
discuss this, despite being apolitical and simply lazy. It turned
out that shooting at the foe is easier than discussing the fate of
Homeland with compatriots. Soon they will send You a bill for kindness
and agreement, and it will turn out that the celebration is not in
Your street and the congratulations are not for You.
